Shake a paw

DAnielle thinks my wife thinks that the dogs at shake a paw are from Puppy mills.

Do you agree or disagree?

Re: Shake a paw

I think dogs at most pet stores are from puppy mills. Reputable breeders will not sell their dogs to pet stores because they do not want to give up control over where the dog is placed. Pet stores sell to anyone who has the money, good breeders screen and interview potential parents.

Re: Shake a paw

Scott fell in love with a dog at Shake a paw and I am very hesitant of buying from a puppy store. I think they are from puppy mills and they tell you what you want to hear. I also thought the dog had a cold. His eyes were running and he had what looked like dry mucus on his nose. The woman told me he was sensitive to the cleaning products they use. HE was also less expensive b/c he has been there for 3 months. I still think $699 is a lot of money for a dog that is not from a breeder.

They also want you to pay $40 for a 14 day health guarantee. Shouldn't that be free? Shouldn't they stand behind the animals they are selling?

Most dogs from pet stores are puppy mill dogs. Reputable breeders don't regularly sell their pups in pet stores. If you suspect that the dog is a puppy mill dog, ask about where the dog is registered. The only recognized papers are through the American Kennel Club. If the papers are from a registrar like The Dog Club of America....it's definitely a puppy mill dog.

The symptoms that you described for the puppy sound like Kennel cough which is fairly common in pet stores. It's highly contagious but treatable.

I am a huge supporter of Puppymill Rescue and it's efforts to try and stop this disgusting industry.

ETA: This organization has a lot of small breeds for adoption. Maybe one of these dogs will be a good fit for your home. They are all in foster homes and you are able to converse with the foster parents so you can have a good idea of what to expect...

Re: Shake a paw

Do I think they are from puppy mills? Quite possibly.

However my friend just bought a beautiful Bull Mastif there, she has a great personality and although she had wound up with HORRIBLE kennel cough and had to be hospitalized the place was great the took care of all the medical costs (and dogs from many shelters develeop Kennel cough as well so its quite common)

I think Shake a Paw was so much cleaner than alot of the puppy stores I have seen. But thats JMO.

ETA my friend didnt pay for a health guarantee.

Re: Shake a paw

We bought a mini dachsund there about 3 years ago. He wasn't sick when we brought him home but he was also "on sale" since he was a little older but the sale price was still $500.00. He is a great dog but any future pets I think I will adopt from a shelter.

Scott - please listen to your wife, women are never wrong! Chat Icon
... but in all seriousness, buying from a reputable breeder is much better in the long run, check out this site...

www.breeders.net

ETA: of course not all breeders are "good", so if you do find someone from the site, go visit and trust your instincts.

I've heard that too.

Definitey go the way of a shelter/adoption.

Re: Shake a paw

I am sure Shake A Paw has some great doggies-and people have had good experiences-but we had a TERRIBLE experience with them!!!!
We got a shi-tzu and they told us she was sensitive to the "environment" and wanted us to take her to there vet to get checked for her runny nose--after getting home (yes-it was a very impulsive purchase-but she was so cuteChat Icon ) We decided to make an appt with our vet. Our vet said she had kennel cough and gave us meds but also said he thought something else was wrong.....and we found out she had pneumonia....so more meds and more $ but we loved her already. We noticed she wasn't really eating or drinking or going to the bathroom much and after going back to the vet he found she had a problem with her intestines too-one that he couldn't be fixed. She basically was not capable of getting nutrition or hydration. He said it is a very rare birth defect. And we had a 2nd opinion- We had to put her down :(
The people at Shake-a-Paw were terrible when we went back!!!!! They rushed us to the corner to avoid a scene and gave us our money back.

Granted, this dog was very sick from birth-it was the WAY we were treated by the staff there that was terrible. The pneumonia and kennel cough should have been treated while she was there and they should have noticed she was sick. I would never buy from a pet store again-and def urge everyone I know not to buy from them!

AND? do you have a problem with that?
We did NOT return the 2nd dog because he was from Shake a Paw...we returned him bc we realized we were not ready to care for him...he needed tons of attention whereas Casey is more easy going and independent..

If you are really set on a pure bred dog, I would go to a breeder directly.
