My wife tossed around the idea of getting a dog this weekend

My wife tossed around the idea of maybe getting a dog this weekend.

We are still a little ways away... I am getting allergy tested this week and i want to make sure I am not allergic first. I think I am allergic to cats... but not sure about dogs. I have a couple of questions anyhow.

If we were looking for a dog... one thing she mentioned was not getting a dog that will get real large.

We both agreed that the tallest we would like the dog to get would be "ball sniffin" height. Chat Icon

So something not too big... but not pint sized either.

Any ideas on good breeds to look for? Obviously looking for something playful. Good would kids is a plus... but we don't have kids yet.

If you have suggestions with PICS... that would be helpful.

TIA. Chat Icon

Re: My wife tossed around the idea of getting a dog this weekend

Hi. Good for you guys if you are getting a dog. We bought a dog last December. His name is Sammy. He is a cockapoo and they said his max weight would be 20-25 lbs. He is 7 months old and about 15 lbs right now. Cockapoos are good with children and a very easy on the allergies since there isn't too much shedding. By the way, the concept of buying versus adopting might be a hot one here, and we might get some grief for posting this, but if you are looking for certain characteristics in your pet, as I was, purchasing one might be the way to go.

Good luck to you.

Of course I'm partial to Boxers Chat Icon
Bama is small for a Boxer - only 52 lbs. But most average Boxers are only around 70 lbs (male) and maybe 50 - 60 lbs (female).

And a friend of mine has horrible allergies, but she has no problem being around Bama.

ETA this picture - because this is Bama's personality to a T. He loves to chill on the couch with us!

If i was to get a dog... i would most likely look at a bunch of shelters before I decide to go out and purchase a dog.

just wanted to let you know that in addition to looking at shelters, there rescue organizations for pretty much any breed that you can think of....I think it's great that you want to get a dog!

Re: My wife tossed around the idea of getting a dog this weekend

Check Petfinder.com. They have a search that you can do by size, or by breed and in proximity to your zip cpde. Also you can search by age & there are notes to let you know if the dog is trained or not. There are a ton of shelters on LI & in Queens.

If I did not have all my little ones, here is what I'd like:
Boxer (german, if you can find)
Bernase Mountain Dog
Great Dane
Vizsla
Pharoh dog

Shelter dogs and shelter cats are the best.
When you are ready, try doing a search on Petfinders.com. THere is a great section where you can post questions.

I agree. Also, when I was growing up, all we owned were mutts and they were always great with us kids. They were all rescue dogs. I would definately stay away from high maintenance small dogs if you plan on having kids. DH and I are going through this problem now...we have a shih-tzu and we are afraid she will be jealous when baby comes in a few months.

You beat me to it. My two are in my avatar pic. I was always afraid of dogs, even up to a few years ago. I've owned a couple of dogs but these two are the best. We have a lot of friends that own pits, some have kids, some don't. They've all been great dogs. You have to stay on top of the training, but they are really rewarding when you do. Are very good with kids as well.

We bought the white one from a breeder and we adopted the brown one from AZ Humane Society. My boyfriend works there and they were going to put her down because she was 'there too long'. I'm so happy we have her. Unfortunately, pits seem to be first on the chopping block when they need to 'make room'

Good luck!!

Re: My wife tossed around the idea of getting a dog this weekend

We have Weimeraner and we love her to death. She's a great big mush, but not too big...she stands 25 inches high and weighs 55 pounds. We got her through the weimeraner rescue org. on LI (but we got her from a couple in queens). As another poster said, no matter what breed you choose, there is a rescue org for them.
Of course, this also gives me the opportunity to post pics of her!Chat Icon

Re: My wife tossed around the idea of getting a dog this weekend

We have a Rottweiler and she is ONLY 85 lbs and around your "height" requirement. She is on the smaller side, as are most American Rottie. The German ones get REALLY big. The americans alos have a more expressive face.

She's AMAZING with kids and infants, doesn't bark, is VERY playful still at 4 years old yet can be lazy and she's super cuddly--but we made her that way.

I'll add a pic later today
