Re: Leaving LI- very LONG!!! UPDATED!
I got goosebumps reading your last update...you sound so excited and happy. Your DH's response is wonderful - I bet he can't wait to see his kids grow up AND spend time with you. A mass exodus sounds awesome!
Bestest wishes!!

Thanks so much, Sasha!! I am excited. I think this is just what my family needs...my ENTIRE family. We have all seen a lot of heartache here in the last few years: (DH was in the Trade Center on 9/11...barely made it out; my grandpa died of Alzheimer's; my MIL died of cancer). We all need a fresh start. Not that bad things can't happen anywhere else, it's just nice I think to start fresh. We are all going to plan a trip to NC maybe this fall with my parents (which is the HUGEST deal because my mom hates to travel- she has NEVER left NY- but she is really excited), my grandma, my aunt and uncle, my brother and cousins, and of course Dh, the kids and myself. I am so excited. This is just so wild. Yesterday, I was depressed but had this thought that maybe, maybe one day, the quality of life for our family would improve. And here it is, today...and everbody who I love is on board with me too! This is so cool!

Re: Leaving LI- very LONG!!! UPDATED!
I am in a similar situation, but it is a bit different... My dh and I decided to move upstate. He is taking a new job, great money and he can work from home. He is entirely stressed with the city commute and we are tired of not being able to save, etc... b/c LI is so damn expensive. Here is the Kicker- I have a 2 year old boy and a three month old girl- first granddaughter. My parents center their entire world around their granchildren. Did I mention that my dh's family lives upstate? This is not the only reason why we're moving there, but if we're going to move why not be close to family? We are building our dream house up there- triple the size of our current house for the SAME PRICE. We told my parents a week ago and since then my Mom has not called me and according to my brother's has been crying a lot. She usually calls me everyday. I am so sad that I am breaking her heart, but we are trying to do what's best for our children. We told them that we will be down all the time b/c my husband will have to be in the city a lot still. Nothing seems to help. I do not want to feel guilt for the rest of my life and I don't think my MOm has the right to be this angry. Any advice?

I don't understand why she doesn't call you? I would call her again. that's pretty mean spirited IMO.
like you said, you should not have to feel guilty because you want the best for your DH and kids.
good luck

Re: Leaving LI- very LONG!!! UPDATED!
Thank you, Lisa! My parents keep flip-flopping. Yes, we want to move. No, we can't move. My DH and I decided that we have to do what's right for us and our children. We are going to visit NC, maybe in October, but definitely again in the spring. My parents are going to come for the trip. Hopefully, we will all fall in love and make the move together. We'll see. Time will tell. I am just excited to go and visit. Small steps...small steps...

Re: Leaving LI- very LONG!!! UPDATED!
Just remember that awesome salary your DH earns now will be no where near what it is in NC. It will be a lot lower.
We looked into moving to Tampa from LA- similar to NY prices for everything, even more for housing- with DH working and me being a SAHM. After seeing the paycut he would take from leaving LA, it just didn't make sense.
Definately look into it and see what your DH would earn in that area in his industry and THEN compare the cost of living.

I'm sure your mom is not angry at you, she probably is just sad and upset. She's allowed to be sad, and she will come to terms with it.

Actually...we'd be in GREAT shape! We would sell our current home in LI, and buy a BRAND NEW house in NC for CASH!!! No mortgage at all. That's even after we pay back our current outstanding mortgage and home equity. So in NC, we'd only have taxes (which are NOTHING in comparison to what we're paying currently), utilities, etc. Ahhhhh....to not have a mortgage!! Heaven!!!!!!
