Opinions (advice needed) PLEASE..job related
I currently work in Customer service.
there is an opening I applied for in our Claims department. IT is 6 months of classroom/floor training and then Full time working from home, they give you computer etc. Set hours from 6:30-5:-00 ( any 8 1/2 hr shift).
Bad part is its between a $2000-$4000 pay CUT and not too many raises due to the higher salary I make now.
Why its good..Its no phones( hate that!) , Obviously can work from home when sick. Can go to school early in the day, earlier hours..No need to get dressed in the am..lol AND..If I get PG or have a baby, longer time at home, much less money in childcare untill Baby was too active to do my job at home and have the baby at home.
PLEASE tell me if I shoudl do it? Or give me advice for why or why not?
Im sooo torn!
P.s The pay cut WOULD affect us. I would be saving money on gas obviously and some other stuff like lunch at work, and I would miss my friends at work?
TIA! I really need some advice!

I say if you can still manage, go for it. Besides, you will be saving money on transportation, lunch money and even work clothing. It should balance out anyways.

Yeah just think about all the extra money you would use on gas, food and everything else that people spend on a day to day basis.
I would do it if I had the opportunity.

To me it sounds like a good opportunity. Less money is not to good but you would be saving money in the long run. If you're planning on having kids then even better for you. Good luck...keep us posted on what you decide. Start making numbers to see if you'll be ok financially & maybe take it from there.

Re: Opinions (advice needed) PLEASE..job related
A $4000 pay cut sounds worse then it is...it comes out to $53 less per week assuming a 30% tax bracket which is probably low.
No commuting, smaller wardrobe with easier care, lunches and breaksfasts, etc will make up the difference.
The flex schedule sounds really appealing!

Honestly Donna, I would jump at this opportunity if I were in your shoes
The lure of working at home and knowing that despite the pay cut, it would balance out due to cutting commutation costs, would definitely be a huge perk to me
Good Luck!!

I recently took a paycut to not commute into the city and take a different job I would enjoy much more. I am happy I did so.

I work from home (not by choice - my company moved to FL) - and there are many things to consider. Personally, I am not ahppy working from home. I miss getting "dressed" for work - and having co-workers, and going somewhere else. Poor DH has to take me out all the time because I go stir crazy - by the time he gets home I am crawling the walls. I posted on the Jobs section if you want to see my opinion of working from home...

I totally agree.
Maybe my calculations are off but $4000/yr after taxes is really only around $175/month, no? That's a month's worth of gas (which you are now saving on) and one bill - like maybe a cell phone bill or something.
For the benefits of working from home - I would definitely say it's worth it.

Re: Opinions (advice needed) PLEASE..job related
Donna, I would say go for it because in the long run it will pay to be able to work from home. My only concern is that the pay cut WOULD hit you guys and that is a big deal especailly if you have to support another family member (baby). Have you thought about looking for a job with another company?

Re: Opinions (advice needed) PLEASE..job related
Definately go for it. There are so many pros, aside from the pay cut. I would love to have a job where I could work from home like that, especially now that the baby's almost here. Good luck with your decision!

Re: Opinions (advice needed) PLEASE..job related
I would do it, but I do think you should consider the social aspect of the workplace. Ia m the type of person that gets aggravated by a lot of the typical office BS. I am also pretty socially active in my personal life, so I don't think I would miss having co-workers around every day.
As others said, the pay cut really isn't much after taxes. If that is the only thing stopping you, I would make the change.

Re: Opinions (advice needed) PLEASE..job related
I "think" Im gonna do it. Im scared, especially because I am a very active person socially with my work friends. BUT I think a few of them I would still see outside of work.
My main conecrns were the lack of socializing..and money. The money may even out.
I dont like my current job , BUT ugghh..this is a hard decision.
I REALLY appreciate the advice..its getting my thinking on the right track!
THANKS , and anyone else, please let me know your opinions.

Re: Opinions (advice needed) PLEASE..job related
I would definitely do it. It would seem to me like I'd be saving money working from home, and having a child in the house. Childcare costs are approxomately $1000/month! You'd end up saying at least $8G working from home, and having a baby at home.
Good luck with your decision!

well the pay cut would be less then childcare. I know I wont be able to work from home with a 2 year old, but I can get at least half a day done and get half day child care. Ive looked at other companies, there is not too much open in Customer serice right now, or they all start at like $25-$28 K..thats way way too little.

THIS is what I'm worried about....I LIKE..no LOVE seeing my friends at work, BUT if I dont do it, and get PG and have a hard PG where I need sick time, I can still pull off working at home sorta sick, NOT going in to the office, and I will have to go back 12 weeks later and then Im screwed with very $$$ childcare. At home I could pull off working for a while with a baby, eventually it would be too much.
I would be stuck to the PC for 8 hours a day, no flexibility other then the start time.
Im scared of making the wrong choice!!

Re: Opinions (advice needed) PLEASE..job related
The money saved on a year of childcare should you get PG soon would outweigh the pay cut by in immeasurable amount. Plus before that time comes, you will save money on dry cleaning, gas, general car maintence, lunch, work clothes, etc. Plus you will save stress of commuting. Personally if I had the chance to work from home, even with a pay cut of that amount I would be willing to do it! Really after taxes you are only lossing about $200+ a month and I know if I added up the above expenses it would equal more than that a month!
If you are worried about the interaction you would miss, a balance would be if you have the option of occassionaly working from the office. Maybe once a week or something like that.
