Benjamin Moore vs Behr
I've heard people talk about them both. So, which is actually the better brand?

Re: Benjamin Moore vs Behr
I've painted rooms in three houses... yes three (I told DH once I get to my 30th room I'm retiring ). Hands down, no contest Benjamin moore is better.
I once painted a room bugundy. I bought Behr trying to save money. Well, I saved nothing and it actually costs me more because I needed 4 coats of the Behr instead of two with Benjamin Moore.

Re: Benjamin Moore vs Behr
We've used Behr so far in several rooms....my husband does all the painting and he likes it so far. On our next project we will paint LR using Ben Moore and see how that is but I have heard Ben Moore is better from alot of ppl but so far Behr has been good to us.

I want to see proof of this. Benjamin moore is better paint hands down...It lasts longer without needing touchup, it goes on smoother, and the paint goes a longer way....
Maybe consumer reports voted it as being better because BEHR is $10 cheaper a gallon. Scott

Hmmm I find this totally surprising but CR has Behr over BM in all categories.... I will try to post the listing here. We will only use BM though.
Image too big, Scott I will FM you.

Its in September 2005 Consumer Reports.
http://tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050820/FEATURES0301/508200314/1406
Consumer Reports' "best overall" paints in all gloss levels were Behr, a Home Depot brand, at $20 to $23 a gallon; Kilz (which used to make only primers and now makes paints), rated a "best buy" at $16 to $18 and available at Wal-Mart; Valspar (which makes Lowes' American Tradition line), at Lowe's for $20-$22; and Dutch Boy, at $13-$16. (The full list, as well as breakdowns by finish, is at www.consumerreports.org, where you can get a month's access to archived reports for $4.95.)

Hmmm, that's interesting since Benjamin seems to have an overwhelming majority of votes here. Would it have something to do with where you bought the paint as well?

I also think it depends on the color. If you are doing a lighter color you could probably use Behr. For deeper more intense colors I would use BM with a tinted primer underneath. I painted a kitchen in one of the apts I lived in with BM cherry red with a tinted primer underneath with two coats and it looked perfect. Then I used a indigo blue Behr and needed almost 4 coats!

That may not be due to the paint. Maybe the walls in your Co op had a problem before you painted.....

did you use a primer first? maybe the paint that was already on the walls was high gloss, or semi gloss?

Re: Benjamin Moore vs Behr
Makes me wonder why Consumer Reports rated Behr one of the best paints out there.
Usually they are right on the money with all their ratings for various products.
And its not like Home Depot would have tipped them off because they are not for profit.

Re: Benjamin Moore vs Behr
My painter will also only use Ben Moore. He had a lot of problems with Behr in the past in terms of coverage. He also said that if you went with a color (rather than white or beige) it ended up being streaky. Our whole house is done in Ben Moore and we've had no problems. It's been up 2 years.

Maybe they recently changed their formula so that it works better?

maybe because Behr is just slightly less expensive then BM, and the consumer report is based on 'bang for your buck' criteria.
eta: i'd rather pay a little more for BM knowing i'm getting the better quality paint.

I remember reading the same article in Consumer Reports. But - wasn't it only for particular types. I don't think ALL Behr paint was rated higher. Though honestly, I couldn't say for sure since it was a while ago, but I seem to remeber being surprised myself that they rated Behr as well as they did since most people here and others I have talked to prefer BM. Even when DH and I went to buy paint for our old place, we were buying Behr and there was a contractor at Home Depot who told us Behr was terrible?!

Re: Benjamin Moore vs Behr
We have used Behr in three rooms so far, both light and deep shades. I was really pleased with how all the rooms came out. We got the tinted primer to use underneath the deeper colors.
Our old apartment was painted in BM and honestly, I don't see the difference. I would continue to use Behr in the future. And I see lots of people buying it at Home Depot, so it must not be that bad.

Re: Benjamin Moore vs Behr
We painted 3 rooms with Behr - one of them was a deep red and we also used a tinted pink primer first and it came out great, no streaks. My DH likes Behr so far. We did need 2 cans tho for one room - 2.5 walls (dining room) did the rest in an accent lighter color. We painted the kitchen a sage green from Behr and so far so good also. The color choices are good too.
That's the other thing - you def have to use a good primer first and sand in areas where there are probs -- my DH is very anal about this. haha

Re: Benjamin Moore vs Behr
behr!
most contracters who use ben moore buy a better version than what you would buy in a store, according to a contracter that i spoke too. and funny, another contracter that i spoke to actually said sherwin williams. we just used behr in our new home, and the walls were in pityful shape and it came out great. we primed, sanded, painted, sanded again and then painted a final coat. no complaints from me on behr.
