We have Weimeraner and we love her to death. She's a great big mush, but not too big...she stands 25 inches high and weighs 55 pounds. We got her through the weimeraner rescue org. on LI (but we got her from a couple in queens). As another poster said, no matter what breed you choose, there is a rescue org for them.
Of course, this also gives me the opportunity to post pics of her!
I want a Weimeraner! They are soooo lovable--this is my dream dog! Unfortunately, I live in an apartment and don't think it's fair for such a big dog to be in such small quarters. 
One day, when I own a house with a yard, I will get one

my family had adopted a german short hair pointer, Zoe. She was the best dog you could have imagined. So smart, I swear totally housebroken from day 1.

Let me ask you guys a question.
Both me and my wife work. Are there any issues with any specific breeds or ages in regards to a dog being home on its own?
Meaning... i guess we would walk the dog in the morning... and then when we get back?
Any issues with leaving the dog in the house while we are working? We work a typical 9-6 shift.

My girl is crate trained and we leave her in the crate when we are not home. I hate doing that but she seems to like her crate, she even goes in it when we are home. I hope one day to wean her out of it but she trashed our apartment once and I am not letting her do that to my house.

My Shiba inus are very destructive in the house when they are alone. That is why I have 2, to keep each other company. Other than that the training should do alright. I mean, you have to expect accidents, but for the most part a 9 - 6 shift should not be too bad. How long is your commute everyday?

They say that for every month old the puppy is, that is the amout of hours you can expect them to hold their pee. Example, a six month old puppy should be fine for 6 hours, etc
Maybe you should look into getting a puppy that is a little older, like 9-10 months

When we got our male he was only 5 weeks old, which was way to young. I actually hired a baby sitter for a few weeks. Is your kitchen set up that you could block it off with newspaper or wee wee pads? That's what we did while the dog was house breaking. Once he was, he was able to hold it all day no problem. We also have a doggie door now that has been great. I don't have those worries of being out too long.
As far as any destruction, I think because we got him so young he learned the 'rules' of the house and he never destroyed anything. He went through a little state where he really loved my moldings, but that passed quickly.
We got our second when she was over a year, and she was the reason for the doggie door. She had been a rescue and an outside dog. Our male actually taught her the 'rules' and corrected her when she was doing something wrong. Too funny.
Some people like the crating, I did it with my 1st dog and I felt really bad about it. If you really think about it, the dog is in the crate about 20 hours a day if it sleeps in there at night too. That's why I didn't crate train my new dogs.

One of the great things about adopting Misty was that she was housebroken (we got her when she was 7 months old).
Both my husband and I work and she goes in her crate when we aren't home. The only drawback to Weimeraners is that they have seperation anxiety and can be destructive when left alone. Of course, the upside to that is that she is the most lovable, snuggly thing when we are home. But, she is fine in the crate for about 8 hours a day (sometimes longer) and we walk on nice long walks twice a day.
If you get a puppy, you will have to housebreak it and probably crate train it. It can be done when you are working, but it's probably better to get the pup, take a vacation and work on housebreaking in that first two weeks.
Also, puppies of bigger dogs(meaning a dobie pup) tend to be housetrained much more quickly than little dogs (I think they are better at holding it).

We are going through crate training right now with our 3 month old pup. I ended up working half days for the first two weeks. She still does not enjoy the crate...but i feel better knowing that she is safe in there and won't get into anything. I have her sleep in our bedroom at night b/c I know she's been alone in the crate all day.
Managing work and a puppy is a lot of hard work (especially in our apartment), but she is wonderful and has been a great companion for me while my DH works 12 hour days!

Well if she can get home for lunch, then you might be in a much better position than most. If not though, it is not too bad, especially if you crate train.
ETA: if you have any vaca time coming, it does help the pup adjust if you can take some time to be there the first couple of days.

Also keep in mind that if you are concerned about training or howlong they can *hold it* since you are adopting you may be able to adopt a dog that is already house broken.

I would suggest a boy boston terrier. they are single coat (less shedding and easy grooming), good with children and generally about 20-25lbs-lots of muscle. The boys are solid and bigger then the girls in general. They're not tiny dogs but they do travel well and IMO easy to handle to since they are a little more compact.
Here's a good comparison shot, a shepard, boy boston and girl boston.

I vote for the Mutts...My pooch is also a NSAL doggie...
He is the biggest mushpot, I LOOOVE him, we can take him anywhere, put him in any situation and he does fantastic..he is a leonberger/shep/rottie mix (so the vet thinks, LOL
I also had a pit bull mix ...he was AWWWWSOME, I cannot recommend them enough, and I plan to get another one when I am ready(I had to put mine to sleep in december..cancer....)
Good luck in your hunt, and yes and older pup would be best for being left long hours, Barney doesnt need his crate at all anymore (stopped using it when he was about 6 months)

And I of course would recommend a Lab.
So you will have to decide for yourself I think. Everyone thinks their dog is the best, obviously.
However if you want a dog that reaches your crotch a chihuahua will not do the trick...lol

I love my dog. Golden/Chow Chow Mix. Got him from the shelter! Hes a little nuts... (hyper) but hes a puppy. Honestly it took less then a week to train him. He goes in the cage when we aren't home. Mike and I try to come home at lunch. Vanessa could make it home and back to work during lunch (mike did it) to let the dog out. I think as long as you do that you should be fine.
