I'm thinking about making egg shaped sugar cookies. I want to ice them, just solid colors but want it to be hard and shiny

Royal icing?
This.
But I know some people on here have posted about it, and even posted tutorials on how to do it. And there are different recipes using different ratio of ingredients to make royal icing to pipe the outside of the design and then thinner royal icing to fill in the design ("flood" the cookie). Some girls on here are very good at it... I know one of my former clients made really impressive cookies for her kids' birthdays and stuff, but I forget her exact screen name (I think it starts with jkl).
You may want to run a search to see how people ice their sugar cookies to get the details on exactly how to do the royal icing. Or even google it. The royal icing comes out beautiful if you do it right!

You can also add some luster dust that gives it a really nice shine and it comes in all colors
