Public but in the county I live in you can open enroll and there are also charter schools that are part of the public school system so when the time comes we will choose from all option available to us without paying extra.

Re: What kind of school do you plan to/already send your kids to?

I had a whole big post about this last week. I wanted to do a British Curriculum school, but the only one in the area is in Manhattan & it is from ages 4 - 14 (oh and tuition is almost $30K a year). I am starting him in Montessori for his pre-k, and we are looking into Friends academy for schooling. I personally am not a fan of public schools, especially where I live.

Public.
We specifically bought a home in our current school district b/c of it's reputation (both for the education and level of parent involvement.)

Our school district is excellent, so our kids will be going to public school..... plus the only private schools here are either religious or cost as much money as sending our kids to college Chat Icon I'm not crazy about the High School here but we'll cross that bridge when we get closer to it

Thanks everyone. I should qualify what I said. The public school district is considered very good, I'm always surprised when people on the boards say how good it is.

Our issue with it is that only 2 people out of our class (178 in our class) went to an Ivy league school. That really bothers DH, he feels like they don't challenge the students enough. Plus hearing which of the our classmates were hired to teach has us Chat Icon . I mean, I know people change, I certainly have changed a lot since high school, but I still remember what kind of students they were. Chat Icon

I teach in your neighboring district and can tell you that the predominant reason why these kids are not going to Ivy's is not so much that they can't get in but:

1. Parents cannot afford the tuition of at least 40K a year... and then what about grad school? That's a lot of student load debt to start out with...

2. Parents can afford it but it's not a priority. They would rather lease 2 new luxury cars every three years and take resort vacations every year than cut that out and spend the money on college.

I teach AP and college courses in the next district over and trust me when I say I challenge those students, my courses are just as challenging as top North Shore districts (I know the teachers, we give many of the same assignments). The fact that a very small percentage of them are going on to Ivys is more a reflection of the parent's/community's priorities. I've had students go to Ivys and they aren't the most "successful" of my former students.

Trust me as a staff we are Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon that about half or more of our graduating seniors aim only as high as NCC. As we say, they "rise to the level of mediocity"... largely because the parents let them.

Re: What kind of school do you plan to/already send your kids to?

I plan on sending my kids to the same Catholic school I went to. It is right up the block from our house. The Elementary publi9c school in our district is great, but the middle school is not. Also, it is what I know, so I will do the same for my child. Unless I have a child with special needs, in which case I will then send them to a school that can work with that. I am Lutheran, but the Lutheran schools around here are not too close and also a little too small for my taste.

My son goes to public and private wouldn't really be an option since he receives additional services (speech OT and such) through the district. If he wanted those through private school, he would be bussed to the local public school and then bussed back. At least that's my understanding of how it works.

Not to mention, I couldn't really afford private school anyway. I think public school is what you make of it. My sisters and I all went to the same school and I worked hard and did well. My sisters didn't do as well, but then again they didn't try as hard.

The district has to provide the services...and if you live in LI there is a good chance that they would provide services at your child's school. This is my job and I have never heard of it done any other way. Just in case.

Re: What kind of school do you plan to/already send your kids to?

My 3 go to public. Like stated before. I know kids who graduated public school and are neurosurgeons and lawyers. Also know kids who went to the same school and are drug addicts. You can't buy smarts. You are either born with them or not. My girlfriends kids all go to private school on the northshore (Buckley) her daughter struggles so badly. Yes, it does allow for smaller classes and maybe receive some extra attention, but when it comes down to it, she still has a really hard time. I also feel it sometimes gives a warped sense of realty. I would never want my child to feel poor and have to try to keep up. Just my opinion.

Re: What kind of school do you plan to/already send your kids to?

I'm a teacher, not a parent. I teach at a private school, and I'm a product of public school, subbed at a Catholic school...I've seen it all :)

The best choice of schooling really depends on the child. Different children will succeed in different environments. You know your child best and know what time of environment might be most supportive, encouraging, challenging, and healthy for them.

Private school offers small classes, lots of personal attention, and the curriculum can be a little more creative because they are not as bound to the state testings/standards. It is easier, generally, in private schools to provide a differentiated classroom.

Public schools offer more diversity, and if anyone has special needs public school is absolutely the way to go. They have the resources to provide for children with any special learning, social, behavioral needs. The quality of education in public schools are great!!!

If you have any questions about my school in particular, please FM me :)

I am not a parent at this point in my life but I am a teacher.

I agree with that Tah-wee-zah said about the Ivy league school comment. I teach in a high school and many students do not even apply to Ivy leagues today because of the cost factor and because of a lack of desire. IN addition, there have been reports lately that many of the Ivy League schools are wait listing students from LI because of the mulltitude of applicants that they get from LI. I know of a couple examples of students that I know.

In addition, I don't think that saying a district doesn't challenge students enough. What a student gets out of their high school education is directly related to what they put into in.

Also, I think it is quite judgemental of someone to say that someone that you went to HS with is not a qualified teacher. Actually I think that is quite horrible. People change a great deal since HS. I know that I am not the same person I was in HS and I was a very good student. I am sure you are not the same person you were in HS either. I see nothing wrong in teaching in the HS you graduated from.

I am a fan of Catholic schools...Leo is not a fan of Catholics(all the priest issues) so it will just depend on the school district.

I can understand what you are saying. And I didn't say all the teachers in the district, but there were 2 specific ones that I am still very surprised by, and they've both been with the school since we graduated college over 10 years ago. Maybe you're a better person than I am, but I think that you might find when you become a parent you become a little judgemental about who will be spending 7+ hours a day with your child.

I can totally understand being aware of who your child spends 7+ hours per day with. I get concerned when students that I have had in the past have certain teachers that aren't the greatest. Also, while I know I will be quite critical of my future child's teachers, I also will inform my children that they will always have bad teachers and teachers that they don't like. I will explain to them that it is just like real life. JMO

I guess my point is how do you know that those 2 people in particular are still "bad?" Don't you think people have changed in the past 10 years? To me it seems like you are making a generalization.

I believe that your child can do well in any school as long as there is strong parental support and involvement. We are sending our kids to public school.

We live in a middle of the road district, not the best and not the worst. We plan to be very involved in our children's educations and feel that as long as we are involved, they will succeed.

Montessori school for pre K & & kindergarten

The public schools are great where we live, but I may want her in a private Christian school. We have not decided yet. We are putting her in Montessori for Pre K and K.

This is not necessarily true. Students whose parents enroll them in private schools do not have the same right to special education and related services as students enrolled in public schools.

School districts must provide private school children with services equal to a proportionate share of a district’s IDEA funds. That means if private schools located in a district enroll 5 percent of all the students in a district who need special services, the district must spend 5 percent of its IDEA allocation on services for those children. However, individual students in private schools are not entitled to any particular services.

To answer the OP, we don't have kids yet. However, we're focusing our house hunting search on towns with excellent school districts so we can send our future kids to public school.
