We actually put pea gravel because the mulch attracts a lot of bugs and the rubber mulch gets very hot in the sun and is expensive. We put the gravel down in the fall so I am hoping with the rain and snow we got it helped wash away alot of the dust. The kids don't mind running on it, it doesn't get hot and you can walk on it bare foot.

Is gravel good for 'cushioning' falls?
I definitely like the idea of less bugs too.

I definitely like the idea of less bugs too.
They haven't fell on it yet, but there are no jagged edges that you would get with mulch so, while the material is harder I don't think it would hurt more when they fell, if that makes sense.

Yes, makes sense. I feel like pea gravel will be less mess in their socks/clothes too.
