What Pre-Natal Classes are you taking?

So far we are doing the childbirth/early infant care combo and breast feeding.

Is there anything else we should be doing?

I took these classes thru Good Sam Hosp.:

- Early Pregnancy Class
- Lamaze/Childbirth Class [5 week course]
- C-section Class
- Breast Feeding Class

Now that my DD is here, I will be taking:

- New Mother Support Group
- Infant Massage

Randi which hospital are you at again? Columbia or Cornell...I forget? I ask because I'm delivering at Cornell and was wondering if anyone else was taking the classes there. We can take them there or at our dr's office...not sure yet but I need to get off my butt and register.

We plan on taking a birthing and breastfeeding class.

Re: What Pre-Natal Classes are you taking?

I am taking Hypno-birthing.

I am Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certified (PALS), way beyond basic CPR and Neonatal Resucitation Certified (NALS) so I'm covered with this. I will be going over all of this stuff with DH as a refresher, his CPR certification expired a few years ago.

My midwife group does breastfeeding classes and support as part of their services so I'm covered with that.

I think thats it

I honestly cannot keep the current names straight-- but it is NY Presbyterian on 68th and York-- isn't that Weill Cornell??

I am actually taking the classes at Hoboken Medical Center because I guess I called too late, and was shut out of the childbirth class at NYP. And, the Hoboken hospital is 3 blocks from my apartment-- it's all the same info anyway.

Of course I am still doing the hospital tour at NYP.... I am doing that on 11/20.

Other than the ones you mentioned, I'm planning on taking a CPR class.

Re: What Pre-Natal Classes are you taking?

I may take a BF class... other than that I don't think I will be doing any classes. I got some dvds from the library.

If I did take a childbirth/lamaze type class, I would take it after 32 weeks - which my dr. said is pretty much the point of no return for the babies to turn. If they stay in the positions they are now (breech/transverse) I will be having a c-section.

Yup, that's Cornell. I remember us talking about this before I couldn't remember either way and since I've just seen you say NYP but didn't know which NYP you were referring to...they're both NYP Hospital but one is Columbia (the west side) and the other is Cornell (the east side).

CRAP! So the hospital class is already full huh? My OB warned us to register early. I guess we'll just take them there then. Like you said, the info is all the same.

Guess I need to get on scheduling the hospital tour too. Chat Icon

Re: What Pre-Natal Classes are you taking?

I just called last Thursday-- at 25 weeks. Personally I think it's wrong that people can get shut out... but it's easier for us to do it closer to home anyway. But, I can really take the classes anytime in the next 3 months, so I don't get how I couldn't get into it-- but, I also only wanted a Saturday one-day session because that is what worked for us.

I always call that hospital NYP cause that was the only one I believe for a while. I think the Cornell/Columbia thing is fairly recent-- so, I just have always known that hospital at NYP....

I'm only taking infant CPR (along with FH and my parents). The rest I bought DVDs and books for (childbirth, breastfeeding, newborn care). I'm doing the hospital tour, but that's not really a class.

Re: What Pre-Natal Classes are you taking?

I took a six week course that included childbirth/lamaze class, breastfeeding, and had pediatricians come in to "practice" interviewing them. Although the course touched on the basics of infant care, my hospital does a more in-depth "training" when we are actually admitted.
