I had a 60th birthday party for DH's uncle at a country club in Holbrook. There was a DJ and a buffet-style dinner... I wore a black low v-neck cocktail dress from Banana Republic and I was one of the dressiest people there.
His own daughter wore a skirt and a button down shirt similar to what I would wear to work.
I guess I would take into account the people attending and what they typically wear to functions...
