What stores are you buying back to school clothes from?
I want to make sure DD fits in. At her pre-k program the kids mostly wore Children's Place. I heard that last year in K it was Justice and Limited Too, just trying to figure out if those are still the right stores.
I feel like I'm in high school again...

I worry less about where and more on what. This year, it seems like retro is "in". Alot of "Rock And Roll" style clothes, flashy saying, guitars, glitter and bedazzled. I've seen this type of stuff everywhere I've gone (Walmart, Kids City, Justice, Children's Place). I pick up pieces that I think can interchange and still be "cool".

Re: What stores are you buying back to school clothes from?
I have boys.. so maybe it's different. I haven't ever had to really worry about their clothes deciding if they fit in or not. I generally shop the sales. I think a lot of parents do that - especially with the younger kids. I take the boys with me and let them decide what they like. Robbie will almost always pick the stuff that his friends are wearing. Noah always goes his own way and picks whatever he feels he likes best.
The first month is kind of a throw away - it's usually hot so they wind up wearing their Spring clothes - cargo shorts, tee shirts.. maybe a hoodie if it gets chilly. By the time we do some 'new school' shopping it's about 3 weeks in. Maybe you can do something similar to give yourself a chance to see what's cropping up on the kids in the school where she attends?
As to the 'where' - we usually go to Kohl's, Target, Old Navy and then hit up the mall and see if there is anything at Abercrombie or Zumies for Robbie.
Don't worry about it - at the end of the day your daughter's personality will be what lets her fit in - regardless of the clothes she wears!
Good luck!

Re: What stores are you buying back to school clothes from?
I don't worry about DD fitting in so much as wearing what I like, lol. She is only in pre-k though. I have had such a hard time finding anything that isn't too flashy. I just can't put her in some of the stuff that is out, she is still only 4 years old. So I have only bought a few outfits from Kohls so far. Old navy looks like their stuff is starting to come in now.

Re: What stores are you buying back to school clothes from?
See, and this is why I am grateful for school uniforms!! DD will be in kindgergarten--and will be wearing the gym uniform daily--and I buy her clothes mostly from Old Navy, Carters and Gap here and there and really wherever...
Personally, I think Justice is way overpriced...and I'm not sure it's for age 5.
I'll be completely honest though...I am not really worried about her "fitting in" with or without uniforms. She's a little girl...plenty of time for that. For example, last week she asked me, "Mommy why don't I ever wear bikinis?" I looked at her like, "Wear what?!" I didn't even know she knew the word, but evidently, her little classmates were judging her bathing suits. I took it as a so-called "teachable moment." I told her if they asked her again or whatever, that she should simply say, "Because I like my bathing suits and that's what *I* like to wear!" Etc. Sigh...

Re: What stores are you buying back to school clothes from?
I really wasn't concerned about it but I keep hearing from neighbors with older kids about how mean girls can be, even in K and that everyone is very label conscious. Yesterday at the library someone was talking about how 2nd graders are using Coach bags.
DD has pretty severe social anxiety and cries easily, so I figured that if I could at least make sure she fit in clothes wise it would take some of the pressure off her.

Re: What stores are you buying back to school clothes from?
Both my kids are in Catholic school, so uniforms make me happy However, DD is only in the pre-K program and they don't wear uniforms (just starting in K).
I just bought DD a bunch of the "uniform" type clothes from Old Navy and Children's Place - the khaki and navy pants and skirts, the polo tops, a jumper or two and a few cute tops and bottoms from Target.
I don't go all out and I am not a fan of Justice, Limited Two, Abercrombie, etc. At least not at that age. But I agree with you and hear you loud and clear! Kids can be so cruel, especially girls. I worry about my DD because she is also uber-sensitive. And she is also highly opinionated, and tells me she will only wear pink and won't wear certain clothes

I don't back to school shop till Oct/Nov. My kids are in shorts until it's COLD!
I have boys, but my "Go To" spots are Gap, American Eagel Kids, and Macy's, and I get a few things from Denny's, Abercrombie and Crazy 8s. I shop sales and with coupons.

I'm going to hit Justice, Daffy's & H&M.
Edited to add: No one is buying their 2nd grader Coach. Maybe giving your kid an old Coach bag you'll never use again but buying one? Not happening in my neck of the woods.

Re: What stores are you buying back to school clothes from?
We do mostly Target or Kohl's.
DD's birthday is right before school starts, she'll get a few things from Justice for her birthday. Definitely can't get her whole wardrobe there, way too expensive!
DS's birthday is November, that works because it gives him a chance to see what other kids are wearing and what he wants.
It'll be shorts for a while anyway most likely!

I've had coach bags in my classroom. And iPhones and iTouches. I teach second grade.

I am so glad that Michael will be wearing a uniform which is black pants & white or light blue polo shirts. I did get the shirts at Childrens Place.

I love the Gap Outlet in Deer Park. I think Gymboree is officially out, they have too many animals/characters on their clothes for Ava(going into 1st grade). I also like Children's Place and Osh Kosh Outlet. I also only get shoes at Stride Rite because she has a wide foot.

That's insane. I don't think I could be friends with a woman who buys her 2nd grader Coach bags or allows them to carry iPhones or iTouches. I think we'd just be too far apart on what's appropriate for children.

I take just a tiny bit too much pleasure in confiscating cell phones from 7 year olds!

I would say JC Penney, Justice and the Children's Place are good stores to shop for your daugther. I particularly LOVE JCP because they always have great sales and good coupons available.

Crashing, but I would feel exactly the same way.
I just don't think I could hang out with her and I don't think I could encourage my child to play with their kid.

maybe cause I have boys, but my first response was seriously?????
I dont shop anywhere in particular, and mostly he wears hand me downs, target, or Kohls. And no one has ever picked on him, and he is often the most popular in his class.
That being said, he went to NYC public schools. I really hope that doesnt change in September since we now live in Nassau county. You all are scaring me.

My response was the same, this is starting in prek? What are these parents teaching their children because that is exactly where they are learning this from.
I grew up on LI in an upper middle class area and I did feel pressure by the time I was 9 or 10 to have the right clothes. But, I'm glad my parents did not give in to it all, though they did buy me a pair of $100 Guess jeans at one point when I was 11. I live in Queens now and so far my 7 yo is aware of stores like Justice and I want her to fit in and feel good also, but we just can't afford to buy expensive clothes all the time and I don't want to place importance on them either.

Re: What stores are you buying back to school clothes from?
I have a boy so it may be different but Kohls and Target have been fine for him. He is developing a sense of what he thinks is "cool" and for the most part I will buy what he likes.
I was in the school a lot this past year participating in a lot of activities with the kids so I got a good look at what they wear. The girls in DS 1st grade class were very diverse in style. There were a few that were very sporty, a few laura ashley types, some tween pop star look alikes but overall I would say the little girls dressed the way I would expect a little girl to be dressed for school. Cute comfy clothes.
The same thing for the higher grades. Sure there are some brands out there especially in the older grades. I saw a few Coach and juicy bags here and there but they were not the norm by far.
