What temperature would you bring a 16 month old to the hospital?

I am getting over the flu. DS has picked it up. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

His temp has climbed 4 degrees in the past few hours, even on Tylenol. I want to be prepared.

I don't want this to turn into a debate. I just want opinions on what you think. He has many symptoms and the fever was the last to look out for. When you would go to the hospital?

I am in touch with the doctor. I just want to have my hand held. I am still not feeling well and my car has been plowed in.

TIA!!!!!!

Besides Tylenol, have you done anything else to bring down his fever, like a cool compress or Motrin on top of Tylenol? I'm pretty sure in severe fever cases, you can give both at the same time without waiting, but alternating them every four hours always helps bring Ava's temp down quickly. As for the original question, he fever would have to be 105 for me to take her to the hospital. She's had 104.4 before, and the combo of meds and cool compresses brought it down. I hope he feels better!

Kelly based on his other symptoms, I wouldn't wait beyond 103 UNLESS he is still drinking water. Otherwise I would be too scared he would dehydrate.

A high temp in a child..in and of itself..is not a big concern. How is he handling the fever? Has he handled fevers fine in the past? Does it come down with Tylenol/Motrin? (even to some degree?) Is he otherwise OK?

The concern for fevers is seisures. But some children can have seisures with a relatively low temp while others can run extremely high temps and it never be an issue.

My answer to your poll is "OTHER" based upon what I just wrote.

Kelly,
What I would do is to call your ped. Right now before it gets much later in the evening. Ask him at what point should you either A. Call him back...OR...B. Go to the hospital..

Personally, if DS was 104 or more for more than 2 hours and fever was not going down after removing some clothing and tylenol, I would call the Dr and would be on my way to the ER.

I would definitely try motrin - it really breaks the fever QUICK! Also if he is not eating or drinking, I would bring him in.

Not to scare you but - DD had a temp of about 102-103 a couple of months ago so we took her to the ped, next thing we knew we were in the ER for an xray and urine analysis, then, we were checking in for four days bc she had pneumonia. Based on our experience, you can never be too cautious.

GL - hopefully he feels better soon!

How is he???

He is very whiney and wants to be held. Oddly enough, he is still drinking. In fact, the past 2 days all he does is drink, not eat too much. That's why I haven't been as freaked. But he is closing in on 104. Motrin is his next dose at 7:00.

His diarrhea hasn't happened for a few hours. And the snot is running, so the stuffiness is now running. The cough is getting worse, which is to be expected with the runniness of snot.

Thanks ladies!!!!!! Chat Icon

Re: What temperature would you bring a 16 month old to the hospital?

Honestly it really depends on the reason for the temperature and the other symptoms - my ped has said in the past he is more concerned with 101 and pneumonia than 104 with coxsackies. With our ped it is phone call at 104 - and maybe ER at 105 - but we have never gotten higher than 104.5 and we are being monitored with him when she gets high. If he has diarrhea and a high fever that would be more concern than just a high fever - since a fever can help to cause dehydration quickly.

My ped said with higher temps motrin is more effective than tylenol - and with higher temps you might want to try alternating tylenol and motrin (but call your ped to get their advice on this).

My ped told me over 105. BUT- that is for MY child, who regularly runs fevers of 104-104.5 range. well, not regularl, btu when she gets a fever, it usually goes up ot 104 before breaking.
We have also dealt with a febrile seizure, and while it is super scary, there is really nothign to do- EXCEPT if it lasts more than 10 minutes, or if dc has a second one- again, per my ped for MY child who has already had one.
good luck, i hope he feels better.
oh- motrin always works better for us.

Thanks ladies! He was down to 102.5 by the time I put him down to sleep. I hope he does well tonight. At least it is going down a little with the medicine. The dr said once it stops going down and remains consistent, then to think hospital. But I think we are okay. Chat Icon

I totally agree with this... DD was runnig a temp for 5 days up to 105 at some point and my friend who is a PA said as long as DD was eating and DRINKING just do the tylenol and motrin and call ped which told me same thing after 5 days then its not viraL anymore...
