what to do w/ wood window frames?
We replaced all the windows in our house with Andersen's in the spring. Now we're trying to decide how we want to "finish" the windows.
We've been looking at stains, but I just can't decide on a color. Would it be odd, if they didn't all match? I'm not too worried about doing them differently in the bedrooms but our downstairs is a fairly open floor plan.
And then do we stain the molding to match, or paint it...(the only windows we've finished are in the baby's room - we left the wood a natural color, and painted the molding white)
If you have wood windows - can you show me pics? TIA!

Re: what to do w/ wood window frames?
About 11 years ago my Dad replaced many of his windows in the main living area of his house and stained them an oak stain. He trimmed them out in oak and then replaced all of the baseboard mouldings and window mouldings in oak. All of them matched the hardwood floors he also refinished, so yes, the same stain throughout, for an open or flowing plan.
He wanted to replace the doors (all wood 6 panel) but fell ill before he could and stain them to match everything else.
Sorry, I don't have pics of his house to post.

With an open floor plan like yours and being that you have the three rooms a different color, I would keep the window moulding the same color throughout the downstairs...and I would match it to the color of your base moulding.

if Al ever gets around to base molding
but what about the wood on the actual windows themselves and the "pseudo french" sliding door (not the moulding trim) - dark or light stain?

I don't know, I think I would paint the wood (and the "faux french door") to match whatever color you chose for the moulding.
Unless you would prefer a stain...then I would probably do a natural/light.

see, I'm leaning towards a light stain or paint also, but Al's anti-paint (since we could have ordered them prefinished/painted) and it would be a huge PIA.
ugh, this is why they remain as they do.

Re: what to do w/ wood window frames?
ugh, don't fall for the prefinished/painted gimmick! (lol)
We just put up preprimed base moulding and Chris said "never again" - he hates the way the paint took to it, or rather, didn't take to it in spots. I personally think it looks great but he seems to be particular Painting trim just takes a steady hand and LOTS of patience...it's not so bad.
