What to do with a formal dining room when you don't need it

The house we just bought has both a FDR and an eating area in the kitchen as well. We're not big entertainers and when we do it's always an informal thing plus the eating area is big enough to hold a large table anyway. I'm looking for suggestions on what to use it for. It's the first room on the left that you see when you enter so I don't want it to turn into a junk room.

I agree but if you really don't want it and won't use it, I would make a really nice home office, with built in bookcases and a nice big desk. Maybe even put french doors on it so that it doesn't seem like it was supposed to be the dining room.

Re: What to do with a formal dining room when you don't need it

Ohh...I was just thinking about one of my friends parents house. They had a formal DR, but when you walked into their house there was a room on the left where they put a few nice upholstered chairs and a baby grand piano. It looked really nice.

Could you add french doors and make it an office or a play room. That way you could close the doors if it got messy and you would have to see it right when you walked in?

I think the sitting room with French doors or even a home office/library.

Thanks for the great ideas. We'll probably go with the sitting room idea. I already have the french doors with the home office idea for the formal living room which is right across from the FDR.
