What to expect at first RE appt? - UPDATED with APPT INFO
I'm suddenly very very nervous and I don't know why.
Anyone calm my nerves by letting me know what I can expect today?

Re: What to expect at first RE appt?
At my first appt we just went over my history and then had an exam/sono and some bloodwork.

Lauren...relax, it will be ok. Mostly they will go over your history and ask alot of questions. Is DH going with you? I also had a sono and bloodwork done.

Re: What to expect at first RE appt?
My first appt was just a consultation, he ahd me come backa few days later for the sono and bloodwork (perhaps it all depends on where you are in your cycle during your first appt?) It will be fine! I promise! In fact, to me it felt empowering a bit.

Re: What to expect at first RE appt?
Dont be nervous! Be excited that your takening a bigger step towards having a baby!!
Our first consult was great and not intimidating at all. We met with the DR. and went over our health history in detail for over an hour. Then the RE went over my records from the OB's office and recommended a course of action.
Its just to familairize yourself with the process and hopefully to take the correct steps to diagnose why you havent acheived a pregnancy yet!
LEt us know how it goes!
Good luck!

Re: What to expect at first RE appt?
I was nervous for my first appointment too. There's a lot going on emotionally, so here's some .
For me, the first visit was just a consultation. They took my height, weight and blood pressure as well as a very extensive medical history. Then both DH and I met with the doctor and he explained there battery of tests and protocol. If my insurance would have covered it, I would have had an ultra sound as well.

Re: What to expect at first RE appt?
Thanks everyone. DH is coming with me too.
I do see it as empowering, but also intimidating as well. I guess I'm just fearful that something bigger is wrong. But I would need to do something about it anyway.
Chalk it up to fear of the unknown.
Wish me luck!!

Re: What to expect at first RE appt?
Consultations can be a bit intimidating. Sometimes you have a plan to ask tons of questions and when you get there, some of those questions just leave your head and you end up, nodding with everything the doctor says.
I highly recommend you write your questions down. Anything that you are wondering about, if there is a medication you were on or going to be on, definitely ask why that med will help and what it does in your body. Ask about success rates etc. If there was anything odd or unique that has happened your cycles mention it and ask what that may mean.
You know you are in good hands if the RE, answers all your questions medically, without talking around it. Remember, you are there, making sure this is the RE you want to deal with.
Lauren, I hope you have a wonderful consult. Let us know how it goes :)

Re: What to expect at first RE appt?
I strongly agree that you should write down your Q. You're likely to forget something. The Drs know what they need to ask, so they'll cover what they need to too
I'm sure you'll do fine
Good luck

Re: What to expect at first RE appt?
Thanks!
It went well. Very overwhelming with information, but my RE is really cool and I liked my nurse a lot too.
She did an ultrasound today (an internal...HELLO!) and we saw the forbidden "string of pearls" so common with PCOS. In 2 hours with me she was able to diagnose me with PCOS, precribe a regimen for me and explain more about my body than my OBGYN could in 6 months.
I'm scheduled for blood work tomorrow morning and if everything comes back okay, I start Metformin Friday.
She also is trying to get me in to get an HSG (gulp) Wednesday or Thursday so that I can see if there are any tubal problems.
DH finally got the full picture of what I've been going through today too. After she explained everything in plain english and we were done with him, he gave me the biggest hug and kiss in the middle of the waiting room, said "I love you and good luck" and went back to work. If you knew my DH, you would know that the PDA is a big deal. I just about burst into tears of happiness.
We're going Clomid free this cycle, because I'm already on CD7, but if this cycle ends without a pregnancy, we're moving to a monitored (yea!!) Clomid cycle, with IUI
I'm overwhelmed, but so so happy that I've finally got some direction.
Thanks again for all your help, ladies. As DH calls you "The Network" has been great and supportive and so much help!!! I'm sure I'll have a billion more questions coming!!
We've been seeing so many BFPs on this board lately, I hope to continue the trend!!

Re: What to expect at first RE appt?
Lauren,
I am so glad to hear your RE appt went well. And I'm so glad to hear your DH really got into the appt and now knows what you have really been going through. I'll be making my first appt with an RE tomorrow. Good luck with your HSG. I took a motrin about 1/2 hour before the procedure. Luckily, I only had some PMS cramping.

Re: What to expect at first RE appt? - UPDATED with APPT INFO
Good luck, I just started Metaphormin yesterday. It really does a number to your stomach but I don't mind since it will be helping me :) My gyn thinks I have PCOS even though my blood tests came back normal, but I have many signs that say PCOS. FM me if I can help you.

Yeah, they warned me about a billion times that the Met would make me sick.
First they said - "The Met makes some women lose weight..." and I thought "Yay!!" Then they tacked on "...because of diarreha and nausea." and I thought "Boo!!"
They said to cut down on carbs and that should help.
I got 14 vials of blood taken this morning, so when the labs come back I should be able to start.

Re: What to expect at first RE appt? - UPDATED with APPT INFO
I have been on metformin for about 4 weeks now. I started very slowly, with one pill a day for a week...then progressed to 2 pills a day and now I am at 3 pills. I haven't had any negative side effects except that I did lose a bit of weight (which had been so difficult to lose prior)
I don't have pcos, and ovulate every cycle, but my insulin level was 13, and it should be under 10 when ttc.
The Re's never prescribed it for me, because my glucose levels were fine. The ob/gyn that I am now working with did.
However, when I had a ton of immune testing done, insulin was tested and that's when it showed.
Lauren, sounds like you are going to get the help you needed...only good things to come :)

Yes, I feel very nauseous right now! I'm taking 500 mg 3x a day which equals 1500 mg. I'm starting to wonder if I should of started out at a lower dosage. My gyn didn't tell me to cut down on carbs, if this helps with the nausea then I will stop. Thanks for the info :)

Michelle, I truly hope this will be the answer for all of us :) How many milligrams are you on? I just started yesterday and after my second pill I lived in the bathroom...sorry tmi. Today I feel nauseous. I'm on 1500 milligrams, 3x per day with every meal. Good luck to you as well :)
