what toys ARE Safe to buy?
OK so I know - don't buy anything from China...but are American made toys safe?
This whole thing is freaking me out. The company that makes Aquadots also makes moon sand (which T and I were playing with today) so do I get rid of it to be on the safe side?
I want to tell my family what to get T for the holidays - but I don't know what to trust and what not to trust!!

Re: what toys ARE Safe to buy?
Thanks for posting. I am having such trouble over all of this. The thing is, though, the toys not made in china are all wooden toys, or stuffed animals (at least from what I have found). They just dont seem like they are going to very interesting to a 6 month old.....this is all really crazy...its making my head spin

Re: what toys ARE Safe to buy?
Ok, well, here's what I'm doing. Because Ava is out of the "put everything in my mouth" stage, I'm buying SOME things that are made in China. For example, her little plush bowling set I bought is made in China, her Dora bike that my grandmother is buying her is made in China and so is her playhut. The chances of those things really being something she puts in her mouth are very small, so the lead thing doesn't scare me. Small parts, well, I worry about that on all toys, so it's not just China made toys. Everything else, puzzles, blocks, etc., I am buying online from companies that do not sell toys made in China or companies that tell you straight up-front where their toys are made. I particularly like these websites:
Fat Brain Toys Kazoo Toys Willow Tree Toys Step2 Moolka Toys

Re: what toys ARE Safe to buy?
prncss is totally on with those websites/stores.
Also check amazon first. In the description, it will say "made in Germany, China, etc.
Playmobil toys which my daughter loves are made in Germany ( or somewhere in Europe) there was an article in the NYT how they refused to sell out to China and how it even cost them some investors, but still refused b/c they had feared quality control. Now they are actually making out on it.
Some good toys: TAG toys, HABA toys, Maple Landmark, Plan Toys, Playmobil, Spiel und Holz, Holgate, Lego, Radio Flyer...
Similar to Prncss, but I only buy American made toys, the ones she gets as presents that are lights flashing IMO stupifying, China made toys are in her playpen so she wont mind going in there b/c its something different and I also know while she still gets some exposure to those types, its very limited.
Not only for saftey, I boycott China toys out of principle. I'm not giving Fisher Price or whomever my money so they can profit 95% and put Amelia's saftey at risk.

Re: what toys ARE Safe to buy?
Keep in mind that US-made toys have also been recalled.... Right now, it seems that all the recalls are from China, but every country has had recalls. There is no such thing as a "safe" toy. Some have more inherent dangers than others. Our plans are to buy things that we thing look safe, and keep a close eye on the recall list. I've had toys that weren't recalled, but still seemed potentially dangerous. (Parts that could come off, sharp things in it, suffocation hazard, break easily, leaving shards/sharp edges, etc).
All toys are "safe" until they are recalled...... Two weeks ago, AquaDots were "safe".....
