We have yorkies. We chose them because they don't shed and my husband has severe allergies.
pros.... -they're small so they're happy to run around anywhere -they're crazy enough to entertain but laid back enough to snuggle most of the day -they love attention
cons... -this is not my experience but they do have a bad reputation with small children because they get nervous around them and they're known to nip -separation anxiety
Vito is still too young to tell his temperment but Bruno is 6 and loves kids as long as they don't try to ride him.
We have a yorkie as well and I'd have to agree with the above.
Ours is just about 4 months old - she has sudden bursts of energy, but they last about 15-20 min and then she passes out for an hour or more.
Ours loves people - big and small. She's hesitant by large dogs though.

Puggle
Pros: -easy to train
You are the first person I have ever heard say this. I have a few friends wtih puggles and all their trainers said they can be difficult to train. But they are adorable!!!
We got our puggle in June and my husband and I are both teachers so we had the entire summer to work with him. I truly believe that it helped so much to have the time to put into training him.

Jack Russell Terrier
PROS: Small (ours is 16lbs), intelligent, generally healthy. Extremely affectionate and playful. CONS: Not a dog for everyone. Heavy shedding, very active and has a will of her own. Loves to dig, chew and will pester you non stop to play.
Many JRTs wind up in shelters because people don't do research on the breed. They think they are like the dogs on TV... they can be with lots of training and exercise though.
We have a Jack Russell too and i agree with the above poster. Pros: he's 14 pounds, incredibly intelligent, playful, etc
Cons: very energetic, loves to play and then play some more , and he loves to be everywhere you are (which can be a pro, but sometimes a con).

really surprised about the Puggle comment too. we have a Pug and even the vet says that they are difficult to train.
Pug
pros:loyal, energetic, great with kids and other animals, big dog in small package, minimal grooming
cons: fawn pugs shed a lot, needy, gluttonous with food, needs lots of exercise, difficult to train
Peke
pros: lap dog, independent, protective, loyal, minimal shedding, perfect for small apt or house with no backyard
cons: likes to be the only pet, not good with kids, can be very stubborn, needs to be regularly groomed

Re: What type of dog do you have?
We have 2 dogs. A toy poodle that we got from a pet store. The pros are he is very loyal and very affectionate. Also a very intelligent breed. I can take him everywhere with me. He doesn't shed and OMG he is just the cutest thing ever. I love him. The cons are he is not that great with children. He is not nasty with them he just wants nothing to do with them. He runs away and looks for me when our niece is around. He barks but not this dogly bark, he has a yippie bark. and the biggest con , but this is in MOST small breed dogs, A luxating platella. His knee cap pops in and out of place and sometimes it can be serious and they need a very costly surgery. Thank god Lucky's is not that serious. We put him on pain killers for a week and he has not limped once.
And our other dog is a lab, boxer, pit mix we adopted from Little Shelter in Huntington. He is great. Very smart, very loyal. He knows who to trust and who not to trust. Every person my husband and i have ever not trusted, yo u know when that peson just has something about them, he knows, he will just stand there and bark, and just sit next to me and watch to make sure i am ok. GREAT with kids. On the downside, even thoughhe has short hair, It's EVERYWHERE, i am sweeping everyday and vacuming a few times a week. and he thinks he is a big lap dog. wants to be up my butt 24/7. We are still working on the fetch thing but he's a great dog. Image Attachment(s):

Re: What type of dog do you have?
We have a Boston Terrier. His name is Cooper and he will be 3 on Monday (my baby is growing up!)
Why did you choose it and what are the pros/cons of your breed? Cooper was an impulse purchase to say the least. Before I knew what I know now, we were in a pet store and my FH fell in LOVE with Cooper. He knew a little bit about the breed and was confident that bringing him home would be the best thing ever... I said OK.
Cooper was fairly easy to train. He caught on to going outside to pee/poop pretty quickly... in 3 years, we've maaaybe had 5 accidents. He is very food driven (like most dogs) so teaching him to sit and lay were not difficult.
Boston's have a ton of energy, so a big yard and plenty of walks are essential. They're also the biggest cuddlers too. They're very good with children... it's almost like they can sense when there is a child around because they're hyper level is totally toned down.
The cons are basically the medical issues. Cooper has some extreme digestive issues, but we maintain it with medication (Prilosec OTC, so we don't even need an Rx for it). Also, because of their pushed in faces, they tend to get hotter faster in the heat. The pushed in face also causes folding of the skin which can become irritated but is easily treated with bacitracin.
Boston's are great dogs... I want 10 more!!!

Re: What type of dog do you have?
We have an English Mastiff. I wanted a big dog, and this is a BIG dog. Bella is 3 yrs old and around 180 lbs. I got her from breeder in PA. She is a great family dog. Doesn't bark at all. My only complaint about her, is her shedding is out of control.

Re: What type of dog do you have?
I have a chihuahua and I love her! Many people think that chihuahuas are yippy little nasty dogs, but they are that way if you make them that way. She only barks if someone comes to the door and she isn't at all snippy. Cons is that she is also shedding like a fiend right now!

Re: What type of dog do you have?
We have two dogs.
Jake is a 6 yr old Rottie-chow mix. We got him from NSAL.
Pros: He is a mush with the family. Very sweet and lovable. He is smart and well trained. He is good with children. Never barks unless someone is ringing the doorbell. He is about 70lbs.
Cons: He sheds a lot. He also doesn't like strangers. He had to be introduced to people we let into the house.
Henry is a 1yr old beagle pug mix (puggle)
Pros: He is a mush also. Extremely friendly and happy. Never has a problem with people coming into the house. He loves to cuddle. He also very rarely barks. He is wonderful with children. He is about 27lbs and that is the biggest he gets.
Cons: Henry also sheds. He has a lot of energy. Does the 50yrd dash around our backyard when we let him out. He also sometimes has accidents in the house. Training has been difficult with him

Re: What type of dog do you have?
I have two labs and a cocker spaniel.
I choose the labs because they are good with kids and I grew up with a lab.
Pros: They are great with kids, neither of mine have ever had any problems with kids even though there are none living in my house, growing up my lab would just lick any child that was torturing her until they retreated. They are smart and easy to train. They are water dogs, so I can take them swimming and to the lake. They are perfect size for cuddling and laying on!
Cons: They are prone to hip dysplasia and ACL tears - easily solved by getting a lab mix of some sort or having their hips checked. They are large (mine are 85-90lbs) so they eat a lot, poop a lot, and generally take up space. They have along puppy hood, about 2 years, with all that that entails They can be destructive if they don't get enough exercise and get bored
I am a lab addict though, I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world!
My cocker was inherited, and she's not a typical cocker, so I won't comment on the breed.

Re: What type of dog do you have?
We have a golden, she was chosen because she was just so adorable and I couldn't see leaving her in the pet store after playing with her. Also I was pregnant and they say goldens are very good with children which must be true because my dog is great with my kids and my 2yr old really puts her to the test. The only thing I can't stand is the hair. I feel no matter how much I clean the hair is always there. I wouldn't trade her for the world but if I knew she was going to shed this much I probably would of got one of those small dogs that don't

Re: What type of dog do you have?
I have a Yorkie
Pro She is the sweetest dog and she loves everyone she meets! She's not yappy, I think most people think all little dogs are. She doesn't shed She loves to play and take walks. I love that all of her messes are small and travels well. I had her out at Tanger yesterday and she just loves to be w/ us!
Cons She's spoiled and requires a lot of attention, but that's my fault though. She was a little tough to train.

Re: What type of dog do you have?
We have a Short Haired Chihuahua
Pros: Don't need grooming - We just have his nails trimmed and give him a bath. His hair doesnt grow.
He is very loveable. Loves to snuggle, and he is also a lap dog.
Energetic - loves to play.
He is great with our nieces and nephews.
Easy to train
Smart
Very Protective of house and Owner
Excellent Vision and hearing
Cons: Sheds in the summer.... Loves to dig holes
If you dont have a backyard or like to take the dogs on walks, then dont get a Chi. He loves to run around our huge yard and play.

Re: What type of dog do you have?
we have a yorkiepoo...we got him when he was 8 weeks old and now he's a little over 4 months. He is so sweet and a really fast learner. Some people would say that small breeds are hard to housebreak, but we are consistent with his schedule and he's doing great! He's smart and sweet (except for the teething! ) and he's a great addition to our familiy!!

Re: What type of dog do you have?
Yellow Lab.......
Gus turned 2yrs on May 7, 2007. He is an American Lab so he has a blocky head and is larger. He's about 110lbs.
Pros------ Gus LOVES love. He just wants to be near you. He'll follow you around and loves to lay on you. He thinks he's a lap dog! He LOVES to fetch, and run. He wants to know about everything. Gus feels NO pain. He is always bumping his head, running into a wall, or falling over while jumping, but he never feels it. When he was at duck hunting school they really pushed him with the force fetch. He never whined, or showed pain but when he had had enough he snapped at the trainer. Now let me say his ear was scabbed red and bleeding when he finally snapped. He is very protective.....in a good way. Gus is all bark and no bite. He is VERY protective of his home, and yard and dosen't do well with older people. Gus discrimonates against older people. White hair makes him go crazy. He's a quick learner and just wants to make you happy. He does best with routine and habbit. He is just now starting to calm down
Cons--------it was hell to get him to be the wonderful loving dog he is now. Joe REFUSED to get him cut, but with his balls he was HORRIBLE! He is very much an Alpha dog and will dominate you. The day he came home from the vet after the nuetering he was already 80% better. Dropping the testosteron help completely! He needs a place to run.....his chain wasn't working well and he was way to hyper. When we moved and he got the backyard he needed he turned into the perfect dog. Everything we were having trouble with was gone. He's still stubborn and he's a barker, but our neighborhood is filled with dogs a nd they all bark so that might be why.
All in all Gus was Joe's dog before we met. He is my little buddy and my mom loves her grand-dog. It's great to come home to him. He loves to curl up on my lap and just lay there while I watch tv or he'll come downstairs and lay on the floor when I do laundry. If you want a loyal, friendly but protective dog that is happiest laying in bed with you getting belly rubs then labs are the dog for you. There's 2 pics of him in my album!!!

We got a Rottweiler! She is now 3 months old, got her at 7 weeks.
Pros: As DH and I talked about kids and he works nights I wanted to feel safe being home alone with the baby in the house. Rottie is an excellent protective of their master and home dog. Great with kids. We wanted the Rottie young and as I was told, when you have a puppy it is like a ball of clay you can shape and mold anyway you like. So far aside from the "puppy life" she is wonderful. She doesn't really shed. Been WONDERFUL with the cat, not BFF's yet but she doesn't even bother with the cat. Rotties don't really bark, only when to they have to, I hate little yappy dogs. I love the fact that she loves eveyone and wants everyone to play with her.
Cons: She will be big, vet said at least 90lbs. I am a fan of the big dogs though so for me it is great. She is a puppy and with this breed they need to be socialized early and stimulated. I have plenty of time cause I am a teacher and off for the summer but DH and I will have to do our share to ensure a wonderful Rottie. GOOD LUCK with whatever dog you choose!!!
We have a rottie too.
Pros: Loyalty, personality, they are very smart, loving dogs. He is also not a barker unless something is wrong. Big dog with a bigger heart. He adapts well to who is around (with little children he knows to not play like he does with us) He is very in tune to emotions, he knows if you are upset and will try to make you feel better. Big cuddle monsters.
Cons: Sometimes too attached and needs to be in the center of all the action. Shedding 2x a year is miserable.
