What would you do? Job/Parent/PG related. I am so confused and torn...LONG..NEED Help

After my maternity leave i took a position as a contractor with a prominent company here in CT.

Since contractors are temp and expendable at any time, to meet their 4th quarter numbers (public company), they laid off all contractors, so i lost my job right before thanksgiving.

I just got a call back, they want me back as a contractor. I am thrilled i proved to them i am valuable enough for a call back but now i am torn.

Here's the thing-financially i make 70 bucks less on unemployment, then i did working and sending dd to daycare for 210 a week with all the extra expenses of working and commuting.
AND i am 13 weeks pregnant now, I am due in July, so i would have to leave on maternity leave again, not eligible for FMLA, and NO BENEFITS as a contractor.

So basically i would be going back to work to get out of the house and for 70 bucks a week. Put DD back in daycare and work while pg. My company does not know i am pg yet. I got laid off a week after i found out i was pg. All in all, i would be going back to work to get out of the house, and I love working, but I dont mind being home at all with DD.

When #2 is born, if i can't get anyone to watch #2, there's NO way i can go back cause we can't afford to pay over 500 bucks a week for daycare, it just won't be worth it.

I totally agree.

If anything, I'd start looking for a different job that pays more and only plan to stay until #2 arrives.

I would stay home with DD. You probably have another 4-5 months of unemployment checks, so just stay home and try to save money where you can.

No brainer for me...I'd stay home. But also think about what will be best for you also...are you the type that will thrive on being in the work environment and will get bored at home? If you think you will be happy staying at home, then I'd stay at home.

I would certainly stay home, no doubt for 70.00. It would be different if you were being offered a perm job with maternity leave benefits. you get to spend time with your child before baby # 2 comes, maybe you being laid off was a blessing in disguise! Congrats on your new baby!

IMHO, I don't think $70 a week is worth it. I'm sure you can find ways to save that $70 elsewhere like, shopping sales and combining coupons, etc.

If you don't need to work to maintain licenses or employablity, I would stay home. Gianna willl only be this little once and if you can spend it with her, do it.

Thank you so much for your replys, it means alot to hear unbiased opinions.

i think i am going to stay home and collect my unemployment until it runs out at the end of May.

I had complications with DD and i hope it wont happen again with this pg, so who knows, i could go back to work and be put on bedrest again at 20 something weeks.

You are right this time is precious with DD, and i would love to spend this time with her just me and her before baby #2 comes.

I also think you should stay home. Is this a job that you could freelance from home?
This is the main reason why I didnt go back to work. What I would have been left with from my paycheck was silly to put Luka into daycare.

I would definitely stay home. If you and DH are not struggling financially - it just doesn't seem to be worth it.

If you really need to get out of the house for sanity purposes - you can always volunteer after DH gets home or get a p/t job after baby comes. Good luck with your decision! Chat Icon

I agree. I would milk unemployment (also look into what happens when you're disabled due to pregnancy on unemployment - if they'll cover you).

I would also look into Parent Centers, mother's groups so you do get adult interaction & dc gets socialization (when you have #2, you want dd to already have the distractions of friends, etc in case one of those moms offers to help out with her).
