What would you do? Neighbor related SORRY kinda long
In the 2 years since we have bought this house we have never really spoken to the couple that live behind us. Last year I exchanged "pleasantries" with the wife and we talked briefly about our vegetable gardens but that is about the most of it....
The only fence separating the 2 properties was a 4 foot cyclone fence that was considered mine..last summer they cut down all the shrubs and most of the trees that was their "fence"..This year they put up a 6ftbstockade privacy fence along the property line...(150 feet+)...they never approached us regarding the fence nor questioned what our intentions were to our yard..
A couple of weeks ago my DH started taking down our eyesore of a fence in preparation of putting up decorative evergreens to "hide" the backside of their fence...and just simply to make our yard nicer..we dont have the $$$ right now to do 150ft of PVC...
Our neighbor is back their constantly, standing on his 2nd story deck, questioning my DH as to what he is doing...I guess he is ****** off that they paid for the fence and he feels that we are "using" it....My DH is trying to be nice but the guy is driving him nuts!!!!!
What would you do?

Re: What would you do? Neighbor related SORRY kinda long
I'd just keep the peace and answer his questions politely. Good neighbors can be very important over the years. Just as bad neighbors can make your life hell.
If they didn't approach you about the fence, that is their loss. There is no real detriment to them having one fence instead of two, so any complaints right now would just be sour grapes.
There are good evergreens you could plant, but make sure you put them a few feet from the fence line so they don't wind up becoming more of an issue between you two.

I would ignore him. If they were smart they would have told you their plans and asked if you wanted to chip in. It's your backyard and they it's none of their business what you do back there. Screw 'em!

Re: What would you do? Neighbor related SORRY kinda long
I'd just honestly let him know that you're adding some plantings to your yard and leave it at that.
We have just the opposite problem with our neighbor. Their fence is rotting and collapsing into our yard and I'm concerned it's going to fall on our recently planted shrubs. I'm not about to split the cost to replace it - they have a pool and are required to have a fence so let them foot the bill. But I have a feeling they are just going to wait until it collapses before they do anything. They've had a boarded up window for a couple of years now and we find beer bottles tossed over the fence from time to time. They're easily our worst neighbors.

Tell them that you are planting some shrubs and trees at the edge of YOUR property line to add value to your home. They must watch those HGTV shows and realize their fence is an eye sore.
I would not plant them too far from the property line and I would double check the survey to make sure their fence is not encroaching on your property. If it is they must move it or you risk that portion of your property becoming a part of their property. It's a lot more to it than that but in NY's it's called adverse possession and a friends grandma is going through a battle now over a portion of her yard that has been fenced in for about 60 years. The fence was about to be taken down recently due to a sale of the neighbors house and she discovered that her fence is on a good portion of the neighbors property and has been for 60 years.

That's a really good point, never knew that. I suppose most people don't check the survey and take it for granted that a fence is where their property ends.
I said to plant it a couple of feet from the fence for the health of the shrub, and so the fence doesn't wind up getting affected by the roots.
When you plant shrubs close to a fence, it affects air flow and can damage the shrub and cause a mold issue also.

If they put up the fence, the backside should face THEIR yard. It is actually illegal to put up a fence and have the backside face your neighbors.

It also makes no sense- it's like putting up a ladde for people to climb into your yard.

I just checked my Town Code and it does state that all the fence should of been put up facing with the structural posts facing THEIR yard not mine!
Im going to let my DH know this so that the next time this guy makes some comment my DH can point this out to him!

YES, THE COURTESY SIDE SHOULD FACE YOU. IN MOST TOWNS THEY CAN BE FINED AND THEY WILL MAKE THEM TURN IT AROUND. I KNOW THIS IS TRUE IN BABYLON.

This thread is great. I never knew that, about the cross slats!
You would think, that if you're paying for the fence, you should be looking at the nice side!

I never knew that either! I would have thought that if you're paying for the fence that you should be looking at the "nice side" as well!

At least not in The Town Of Smithtown..Town Code States that Structural Supports should not be facing towards neighbors...additionally for any fence over 4 feet you need a building permit..which I know he didnt have!

Re: What would you do? Neighbor related SORRY kinda long
Do we have the same neighbor? We took down some trees/bushes last year in preparation of putting up a PVC fence, but decided to wait until this year because of the expense.
So my neighbor put up a half-azzed (didn't even run the length of his property) stockade fence with the "ugly" side facing us. We decided not to say anything b/c we knew we'd be getting our fence in March. Don't you know he took his piece o' crap fence down the next day and left gaping holes in the ground which are now under our new fence????
People really suck sometimes. Good luck with your neighbor.
