What's a good gift for a 2 year old's birthday?

It's a boy, he is turning 2... DH is his godfather... the bday party is at his parent's house (DH's cousin).

I want to get something useful but I don't know what they have or need (they don't live by us & we don't see them too often). I don't want to get them something they already have or something that will gather dust... so I'm thinking of a gift card.... I'm not sure which store to get it from that the parents would appreciate and how much would be a good amount for a second birthday gift (They live on the north shore near Riverhead if anyone knows what's near there) Thanks for any ideas

Can you ask the mom? I know its not really a surprise then but my sister asks me what to get DS. I think $25-50 is a good amount. They might be saving for something specific so they can tell you what store. If you don't want to ask you can't go wrong with Target or Toys R Us.

I think $50 is a good amount since its his godchild. A giftcard to TRU would be good Im sure. Or...you could just ask the Mom if theres anything specific she needs or wants for him. I always appreciate when people ask me.
