We used both, but started with the floor one. Honestly, I liked the floor one because it was right there. I literally followed DS around the house with it the first few days. About a week or so after he was trained, we put the floor potty away.

Re: what's better? floor potty or the step stool with potty seat on toilet?
We had both types and they both worked well for different ages. When first learning it was easier to teach both my DS and my DD to sit down on the little potty. Neither could physically reach the larger adult potty when they first learned to go to the bathroom. By being able to keep their feet on the ground, it made it easier for each of them to gain confidence using the bathroom. While I did not love cleaning the little potty, it was easier for them to use. DS only used the potty ring for number 2, but DD used the potty ring for both number 1 and 2 until her tush fit onto a regular seat without falling in. I would still have to lift my kids onto the seats but only started them on the seat after going successfully on the little potty. wE Also had a fold up travel seat for using on the go. That one was only good until 30 lbs. I did not use it for DS only DD. I did not want him to rest his privates on the toilet (and yes, he tried that when he insisted he was tall enough). I also had him sit down to pee/poo when he was to short to reach the potty standing. Thankfully he is tall so this time frame lasted for only a few months until he was tall enough to stand up on his own.
For on the go, I would pack flushable wipes, extra underwear, and a waterproof bag. I personally did not like to carry a potty seat with me, but I did do it for a couple of months. When first learning, I did keep the potty in the trunk of the car. We did not use it, but my kids both liked having the mental security it was there. HTH

Re: what's better? floor potty or the step stool with potty seat on toilet?
We started with the floor one.. It helped him be comfortable on it... After a month or so, we bought the insert for the big toilet. Even with a step stool, he couldn't reach it by himself.. He is now fully trained and we still use the floor potty for pee only... He poops in the big toilet.. For when we are out, I got a portable toilet that uses plastic bags... He sits when he pees...

I may be in the minority, but I definitely prefer using a seat on the big toilet. It's one less transition to deal with later on. We did this right from the start, and when it seemed to be taking a while, we bought a floor potty for our son. He never really took to it, always preferred the big toilet. Once he was completely trained, we put the floor potty in his room so he could use it if he needed to in the middle of the night or something. Only then did he start using it, and he still prefers the big toilet.

We've only ever used the real potty (except in car rides, where we have the portable potty, which is awesome!!!). My boys were all potty trained by 2!

Go directly to seat on toilet so they are used to the regular toilet from day one.

I prefer the regular potty but we have both. My dd is afraid of the big toilet so she uses the little potty most days.

We use the regular potty and keep the floor potty in the car for emergencies.

Get the floor potty that you can use the seat on the big potty. Trust me, with potty training you are going to see a lot of pee and poop anyway lol. Plus they are good bc you can bring them on car trips if you need. And it's better for them to have their feet flat on the floor (rather than dangling)

Re: what's better? floor potty or the step stool with potty seat on toilet?
I bought a regular adult toilet seat that has a little kids seat built in. That way you just flip it down when it's time for potty and flip it up when the child is done. The seat is made by Next Step and they sell it at Home Depot and target. I did not want to buy a potty because I wanted my child to learn that they go in a toilet and not a box ( plus I wasn't relishing cleaning it out)

I have the small potty but, we've never used it - DS went straight on the big potty since that's what they do at school.
I'm going to have to look into the regular seat with a smaller seat built in though since my potty seats don't fit the best on our pottys.
