whats happening in Long Beach?

No service on the LIRR out and the bridge is closed due to police activity. Hope it isn't too serious, that will make it a nightmare for many people commuting.

It was on the news that there was a out of control FedEx truck yesterday that hit a lot of cars and killed someone, not sure if it has to do with that.

I heard the whole bridge is closed, and the only ways in and out is the atlantic beach bridge or the loop parkway through point lookout

I have no idea what happened...we live around the corner right by the bridge and cops were everywhere blocking lb road to get to the bridge.

The Long Beach bridge was shut down in both directions, beginning at 4 a.m. Wednesday, due to what the Nassau police called "a public safety hazard."

A Nassau police spokesman said he did not know what caused the public safety hazard.

Long Beach police declined to comment, referring calls to the Nassau police, and a woman who answered the telephone at the home of Long Beach Police Commissioner Thomas Sofield early Wednesday said he wasn't available.

Nassau police said motorists headed to or from Long Beach should use the Loop Parkway from Point Lookout, or the Atlantic Beach Bridge.

Bomb threat closes Long Beach bridge

A predawn bomb threat shut the Long Beach bridge in both directions for several hours Wednesday morning, blocking the major route to and from the city and causing a nightmarish commute, Long Beach city manager Charles Theofan said.

"The Nassau police called me at 5 a.m. to tell me that they were closing the bridge due to a bomb threat, and the Nassau County bomb squad was going do to a sweep of the bridge," Theofan said.

The police also closed the Long Island Rail Road bridge for several hours, reopening it at around 8 a.m., he said.

"Traffic is a mess," Theofan said.

Commuters must use either the Loop Parkway from Point Lookout, or the Atlantic Beach Bridge, he said.

The Long Beach police responded quickly to the impact of the threat, Theofan said, with two lieutenants coming in hours before their usual shifts to help deal with the expected traffic problems.
