What's the deal with Layette stuff?
My mom sort of annoyed me this morning. She says she wants to get the Layette stuff for the baby and this confuses me. Is this some kind of old fashioned thing? She wanted me to go to Carter's with her to pick it out and I got kind of insulted since I registered for all sorts of Layette stuff at BBB. But now I'm thinking this is some sort of old fashioned tradition and maybe I was rude to her. I just can't see going to pick out stuff that I already picked out. If she doesn't like what I picked shouldn't she just get what she wants?!?! Was this a bonding thing that she was trying to do? I'm feeling badly now but honestly I have a bunch of other stuff to do this weekend - mostly nursery related stuff - and I couldn't see the point of this.

Re: What's the deal with Layette stuff?
It is old school tradition. Stores like BBB and BRU did not exist. So mothers and daughters would go to department stores and pick out layettes for the babies.
My mother bought all of her grandchildren's layettes at Denny's. We had planned to buy Abby's layette together just the two of us but she sadly passed away just one month before our appointment. We were BOTH looking forward to doing this. However, in her place, I went with both of my sisters, my brother's wife and my MIL to Denny's and Mom paid for it posthumously - it was what she would have wanted to do.
I already made the appointment to go back to Denny's with all of the same players to do the layette for . I enjoy the tradition very much. Is it necessary? Not at all, but if it gives your mother joy and she would like to give that to you as a gift, I'd let her do it. I wish I had that chance.

I'm sure your mom loves that you are continuing that tradition with her in your heart. Thanks for explaining. After I hung up with her I realized that I may have been a bit insensitive and missed the point! I am going to call her.

My mothers (mom and stepmom) are OOS and I wish I could go baby shopping with them.
I would take the stuff off the registry and go with her.

yes, i agree with the PP. i dont think she meant to be offensive. a lot of my aunts/older friends have asked me if i registered at Denny's for a layette.

She's not trying to offend or insinuate anything about what is on your registry. in my experience, people don't want to buy the baby clothes put on a registry, they like to pick it out themselves b/c shopping for baby clothes is fun for them too. I think this is something special your mother wants to do. She could have just picked it all out herself...then if you didn't like it, you would either be stuck with it or have to return it and possibly offend her.
