Whats the difference between iui and ivf?
after reading that other post about coverage, I became curious, what is the difference between the two, what is the procedure, and if you have had either, how long were you trying, and what other treatments have you had?
sorry for all the questions I am new to all this and very eager to learn

Re: Whats the difference between iui and ivf?
There are alot of threads about this, so you should do a search and get more thorough answers...But this should help - An IUI is Insemination. Depending on your issues it is either medicated (the woman takes meds to make more or better eggs) or not, you are monitored and at the time of ovulation go to the Drs. office to have your SO's sperm injected via a catheter into the uterus so as to make their journey a little easier (sperm is usually washed also, so it is more concentrated) and hopefully fertilization is easier. IVF is InVitro. The woman is definitely medicated so as to make more eggs. When most of the eggs are ready to mature, they are retrieved via a minor surgical procedure. They are then fertilized outside the body, allowed to grow for a few days and then the embryo's are transferred back into the body three or five days later via the same procedure as IUI.
After both procedures you wait two weeks and then either AF arrives or you go to the Drs. office for a beta to find out if you are PG or not.

also IVF is more accurate and more expensive and less likley to be covered by insurance. IVF is also more invasive. many drs reccommend you try IUI first but not all insist. depends on y our situation. IUI is basically an improved AI
