Whats the prerequisite for a being a godparent in the Catholic religion
Sorry for such a silly question. My DS isnt even born yet but I am havign trouble picking a godmother. You see, my brother will be the godfather but he (and me) were baptised prodestant. Does that mean now that the godmother has to be catholic?
Someone told me that one godparent has to be catholic. Is that true?

Re: Whats the prerequisite for a being a godparent in the Catholic religion
It really depends on the church. Our church requires both godparent to be catholic, with all sacraments (married in the church). At my brother's church only 1 had to be catholic & then the other "godparent" is considered a "witness" in the church's eyes.
YET there was a thread on this a few weeks ago & some churches required both godparents to be catholic & in good standing in the catholic church.
The Catholic will have to have a paper signed by a priest in their parish saying they are "in good standing."

See thats weird because when Paige was baptized the godfather was the only catholic and he didnt sign anything thats what made me because I thought for sure they would have questioned him or something.

See well our church asked for a signed "form" from their church but then never proceeded to ask for it.
Do you have to meet with your priest first? I'm sure he'll outline everything for you.

Our church requires only one Godparent to be a practicing Catholic.

It really depends on the church, but most nowadays accept them to be the godparents as long as one of them is catholic.

Re: Whats the prerequisite for a being a godparent in the Catholic religion
At my church where DS was baptized, only 1 godparent had to be baptized Catholic and my cousin had to provide a copy of her birth certifcate stamped by her church.

I'm Paige's Godmother and I'm baptized Catholic I was brought up Protestant with you, but my mom never had me baptized. I was baptized Catholic when I was 24.
My Catholic church only required 1 catholic godparent and they had to fill out paper work and have their church send a letter that they were in good standing. Because natalie was divorced they didn't consider her in good standing and that is the reason why my kids were baptized protestant!!!

Re: Whats the prerequisite for a being a godparent in the Catholic religion
The church advised that we should choose at least one Catholic godparent. Nobody CHECKED to make sure that our choices actually WERE Catholic though. No background check, no baptismal certificates required. They just took it on faith that we chose at least 1 Catholic. We could have chosen people that were any religion and nobody would have been the wiser! But I feel like if someone chooses to baptize their child into the Catholic faith, then - regardless of the church rules - you should probably pick at least one Catholic godparent. Since the role of the godparent is to be a kind of religious guide, it would make sense to have a godparent who understands what being Catholic means.
