So, I went to church, got my ashes, am feel kind of ashamed. Religion related (catholic and generally)
I went into the church (St. Andrews) and it was right before mass. I was looking all over for the priests bestowing ashes. I find there is another line, down the stairs in the community center, where they are giving out "ashes only"
there were more people going for that, than there were attending the mass. I was one of them.
drive through religion...wow. Is is just catholics, or is it everyone?
on a side note, as a child, I used to wipe my ashes off as soon as I got them...now I leave them, but the feeling of being "marked" is very disconcerting. I couldn't help but think of the Holocaust.

Don't think of it that way
The "drive thru" line was there to accomodate people who have to go to work.
Hey, I haven't gone at all...haven't even gone to mass since we Christened our godchild...I don't feel guitly...well, maybe I do a little bit.

It is understandable. A lot of people have to get to work so I understand the whole ashes-only thing and I think that it is nice that they offered it.I went to mass and the priest was like "Why do people leave so quickly at the end? Do they not want to talk to their neighbors? Can't we take time out for God?" and I felt that I didn't mean to rush but I needed to get to work. I waited till the priest walked out to leave.
I don't mind the ashes on my head. I'm glad I got them.
I do think people do drive through religion. I often wonder and don't understand why my cousin got married in the church and had her children baptized but has never attended church on a Sunday

I dont think its a drive through religion at all...whats important is that on individual level you're able to reflect your personal life and the meaning of this religious holiday...I know people that go to church on weekly basis and are "devout Catholics"....meanwhile they dont live as one...

It's a work day - it has to be done....a lot of the churches in my neighborhood and the one we belong to does not have a late mass! I cannot tell you how I ran home last year to receive ashes and attend a 7pm mass and we went to FOUR churches....

Re: So, I went to church, got my ashes, am feel kind of ashamed. Religion related (catholic and generally)
I think all religions would rather see their congregations and followers for even just a little bit than not at all. So they make accommodations, rather than lose people altogether. Times have changed.
In my faith, it is more common to visit temple during the High Holy Days than weekly for the Sabbath. Some of the conservative (though not orthodox) congregations are becoming egalitarian in nature so as not to alienate women.
As for marking, I can understand why a person may feel uncomfortable, but I think it opens people up to thoughts and reflection and perhaps discussion. That in and of itself may lead to open-mindedness. Asking questions allows people to learn - from the good and from the bad.

Don't feel bad; you have to work and that is why they had the "express line" The important thing is that you went and you did the right thing!

Re: So, I went to church, got my ashes, am feel kind of ashamed. Religion related (catholic and generally)
The church I went to (St. Agnes on 43rd and Lex) had large signs outside of 3 doors into the church - 2 said "ASHES" and 1 said "MASS." I did feel kind of guilty that there were 2 lines for Ashes and only 1 to go in for mass. However, when I did get inside the church, it was so packed that I don't know where I would have even stood if I was staying for mass.

Re: So, I went to church, got my ashes, am feel kind of ashamed. Religion related (catholic and generally)
I actually had a related thought today during lunch. I ran out to the ATM to get some money and saw tons of people with ashes on their foreheads. I thought to myself, "self, these people didn't ALL go to mass. There must be a priest standing on the corner of 42nd & Madison handing out ashes". I guess I don't really have a problem with that, if the ashes mean something to the individual. But if they don't, then why even bother....
