what's up w/verizon charging $30 bucks for an upgrade?

im so pissed!
tried for my free upgrade only to now have to pay 30 buck every time i upgrade! it's for 'better verizon support' which is BS!
online workshops, etc. which i will neverrrr use!
i know verizon is the last to start charging this fee...but that's why i remained with them for so long bc of the free upgrade every 2 years...they suck! anyone have any tips on getting this fee waived?

This article should give you some insight into why the new fee - you can basically thank Apple and anyone else who uses an Iphone. Link to article

I posted about this a few months ago, I was SUPER pissed! They are basically helping themselves to our $30 to upgrade the phone and get our business for another 2 years. The audacity of this BS company is unbelievable!!!

Re: what's up w/verizon charging $30 bucks for an upgrade?

You pretty much just have to suck it up and pay it. Every single carrier charges an upgrade fee.

Basically, all wireless carriers lose money when they sell a phone as an upgrade. It's called equipment subsidy. Take the iPhone as an example. An 8GB iPhone 4 will cost $549.99 at full retail price. That's pretty much what the carriers pay Apple for each of the phones that they will sell. The carriers will then turn around and sell it as a new activation or an upgrade for $99. So they are essentially losing about $450 every time someone upgrades to an iPhone 4. Carriers charge the upgrade fees as a way to recoup some of that lost money.

I know it's not really the customers's fault or the customer's problem. I suppose they could just hike up the price of the phone and remove the upgrade fee, but I think customers are more interested in a phone for $99 than a phone for $130. It's all in the marketing.

And now that all the carriers are doing it, you are even less likely to be able to get them to waive it when you upgrade.

So they give you a $30 discount on the phone for the "New every 2" and then they charge you an upgrade fee of $30?

Hmmmm

Well played, Verizon. Well played.

Its still cheaper than the above mentioned $500 for an iPhone. I sucked it up and paid it...I figure I waste $30 on crap easily, who cares?

Yes, but when you are eligible for a new phone you get it at a reduced rate for signing a new contract. The whole fee is unnecessary.

Yeah I saw this happen to someone and she was arguing in the store about it...the guy said TMobile, AT&T have been doing it so of course Verizon jumped the extra-charging-bandwagon.

That plus the new contracts not having unlimited data is no bueno.

Giving customers stuff and then taking it away surely will piss people off...and maybe enough to switch services. Chat Icon

Yeah, but this isn't a very good reason to switch services. If you switch, you will have to pay an activation fee at your new carrier and then once you are ready to upgrade, you will have to pay an upgrade fee with them as well. All the companies are on a level playing field with this one.

The fee is there so that the carriers get to recoup some of the money they lose when they sell you the phone at the reduced rate.

The way I see it, if they get rid of the upgrade fee, they will just raise the prices of the phone. Either way the carriers will still get their money. People will either complain about having to pay the upgrade fee or they will complain that the upgrade price of the phone isn't cheap enough.

Yeah which is why we probably won't switch, but mostly because we have a family plan with 5 phones all having different contract dates. This is another reason why we got rid of our landline, we're paying more for our cellphones, and rarely use the landline.

My DH's way of sticking it to the man is by using a regular/not smart phone (or as he calls it a "dumb phone") Chat Icon
