What's worse? Pacifer or her Thumb?
DD is BF and at 2.5 months has found her thumb and wants to s u c k.
She has never liked a paci, gags on it actually, until yesterday. She has been sucking her thumb for comfort to fall asleep in her crib on her own. For the first time yesterday she took a paci to fall asleep( i took it away when she wasn't sucking it before she was out cold)
DH and I don't want her to start with the thumb and at least we can take away a paci.
I just find it weird she wanted nothing to do with the paci when most babies have the sucking reflex the most, then all of a sudden want something to s u c k at 2 months.
Could she be starting to teethe and want comfort?

It's such a tough call. Yes, you can take away a pacifier, but a thumb sucker will always find the comfort and be better able to fall back asleep.
My Andrew started with a pacifier, then wanted nothing to do with it when he found his thumb. He was a thumbsucker from about 3 months on. At his 15 month pedi visit, the pedi said his front teeth were starting to spread from the thumbsucking.
On night, I remember putting him to bed when he was 16 months old and it just occured to me that he didn't **** his thumb anymore. He just stopped and I never even realized when he did.
And his teeth are fine!
Now my daughter is a big paci lover, we'll see where this leads us because she is also "finding" her thumb lately.

Re: What's worse? Pacifer or her Thumb?
From a mom of a thumb sucker or reformed pacifier addict, I can tell you thumb is worse. The pacifier you can get rid of at about 1 year with a 2 week cranky period. The thumb...well we're at 3 years and nothing has convinced her to stop yet. I think I have to wait for her classmates to ridicule her in elementary school.

Re: What's worse? Pacifer or her Thumb?
I go along with the thinking that you can remove the pacifier if necessary. My friends daughter is 5 and still uses her thumb. Not sure if it has affected her teeth, and they do not speak of discouraging it.
I'm not sure how you would stop an infant from finding their thumb when its the thing that comforts them
ETS: yes the **** ing on the paci could be comforting her. Aidan used a paci mostly at night and then forgot about it around a year.

Re: What's worse? Pacifer or her Thumb?
Last school year I had 7th graders who sucked their thumb - so I say the thumb is definitely worse!

Re: What's worse? Pacifer or her Thumb?
Im also a pacifier fan. My sister was big into the "they dont NEED a pacifier!" and her kids never wanted it (or so she says ) well her 4yr old son, although he doesnt s uck it constantly, when he's tired or just wants to relax, doesnt even realize, there goes his thumb... and she doesnt know what to do to stop it.... Now with her 10m old, she's tried many times to give her the paci, and she truly doesnt want it, but we're hoping she doesnt go for the thumb... and there are def affects on both the teeth AND the thumb itself after years of s ucking
I took the binky away from my boys at 13 and 15m with no problems..

How are you planning to keep your DD from thumb sucking? I'd just relax and be glad she has a way to comfort hersefl.

I agree with this. Although I also agree with the other posters that thumb sucking is worse in the sense that you can't take it away...
For now I would just let her soothe herself however she wants to. Andrew is still a thumb sucker at 17 months, but he has cut back.

If the thumb is what soothes her, I know there is nothing i can do to take it away. DH was a finger sucker, he sucked his forefinger at the knuckle and his finger is different than the rest, he has no wrinkes there. He doesn't want that to happen to gianna. My cousin was a thumbsucker and had really bad buck teeth.
I am happy she has something to soothe her whatever it may be when I can't.
I am just confused to why she has the need to s u c k something at a couple months old, when she wanted nothing to do with it earlier.

Not only is it messing up Maddie's teeth - I think it affects her speech.
