Re: What's your favorite baby name that *got away*
My biggest problem with names is that I'm a teacher, and I keep having to cross potential names off the list because of the memories I have of certain students!!!
I also never tell anyone the names I want to use, for fear they will steal it!

I loved the name Emma ever since 1985, when I read Jane Austen's book. I still love the name - but it got really popular - I actually yelled "NOOOOOO!" at the tv when Rachel named her baby emma on friends.
DH and I used to say that if we had a son we'd name him Jackson - cause we were both born in Jackson Heights, we met in Jackson Heights (I moved back after college) and now we live in LIC - in the Vernon/Jackson section.
But it's really popular now - and the crummy building manager in our apt. named his son jackson - so it's tainted.
This is too funny - I love both of those names as well. When Rachel named her baby Emma...I was so ******. And my mom's name is Jackie and her brother has always called her Jackson...for some reason I love the name...also Jake...but these are both so popular now!

i absolutely loved the name sophie... but now it's really popular. my SIL *heard* me mention that i was considering it for my girl once, and pretended not to have heard me. in another conversation about naming girls, she said, " i like sophie!, maybe i'll name my girl sophie."
.
I love the name sophie too, but DH does not

the name I have picked out for a girl is mentioned on this thread (not saying which one ) and I couldn't care less.
If I am blessed with a , the name I picked will be hers

Alyssa. I loved this name since I was little and now it is so popular, we weren't even considering it if we were to have a .
DH and I both loved Emma. So, when we got our puppy, that's what we named her. A few months after we did, Ross and Rachel named their Emma Now we hear that name everywhere we go

That's really funny because before we knew we were having a boy, Ella was one of the names we were considering.

I have always loved the name Jason and my uncle got remarried and his stepson name is JAson. My DH thinks we can still us the name because my uncle stepson never comes to any family functions and nobody ever sees him, but I think its weird. the last time What does everybody think?

I think you can definately still use that name.
Two of my cousins named their sons William, I don't see anything wrong with it. It's not like they will be seeing each other every day.

That's the worst! I had a student who was sooo strange and her middle name is my baby name- I have wanted it for years. She didn't like her first name Savannah so she insisted everyone call her Grace, her middle name. I told her no- that legally I couldn't! I was just a counselor not her teacher so she really couldn't get mad!

Re: What's your favorite baby name that *got away*
Both our baby names(boy and girl choices) are family names- Grace, after my grandmother who is so excited we are naming our little girl her name, and Jackson, after my paternal grandfather and the uncle that help raise my DH when his father died. I know both are super popular and we looked at alternatives, but we are still going with Grace since the meaning is so special. Hopefully we are blessed with a boy we can name Jackson.

Re: What's your favorite baby name that *got away*
considering DH and I still can not really "agree" on names at all, no one has taken any. So I suppose something good came out of that! LOL
I used to really like the name Madison or Madeline, but DH is not liking either. I've loved the name Melanie all my life, but that's my sister's name. It's tradition in my family to name the girls with an "M" name so were are limited and have agreed on one "M" name so far (so we better only have on girl ;) ) which no one has stolen.
The only boy name I have really loved is Henry, but again, DH doesn't like it and with my married last name it sounds funny because it also ends in a "y". So no stealing there either. I guess we're lucky.

If I had a little girl I've always wanted to name her Sara. BUT my MIL's name is Sara and in the Jewish religion, you can't name a child after a living relative. So if we ever have a girl, she cannot be named Sara.

Don't you hate it when a name you've had your heart set on goes and becomes the most popular name in the playground or the name of your new niece/nephew?
Do you have a chosen name (for future baby) that's been taken?
*this occured to me b/c a good friend is due in a few weeks, but her sister is due in a few days and they are actually fighting over the same name. I only hope they end up with kids of different sexes.*
This is the reason why I'm not telling anyone I know my names I'm sorry if that sounds selfish, but I would hate it if it was someone very close (cousin, friend) and I would hear it all the time.
Actually my friend's sister just had her baby and named her Julianna -- that's actually my one of the names on my list. I was a little upset, but I never told my friend, it was just a coincidence.

Can you put an H on the end? Or perhaps give her the English name Sarah and a completely different Hebrew name since that is where the honor lies? I had an Aunt Leah (her English name and I am going to assume that it was her Hebrew name as well) however my parents named me Leah in Hebrew and Leslie in English.

I think you can definately use the name. There are so many "Josephs" on DH's side it is not even funny---FIL is Joseph, both DHs grandfathers, his brother, his nephew (whose father isn't Joseph), MIL's brother, her brother's son and her bother's grandson.

Dylan. I told my friend I loved that name and she named her baby it. She lives in another state and if my DH liked the name I would still name my son that. My DH doesn't like the name though
