What's your favorite budget/bargain vacation?

Is there something you really like to do that's inexpensive? Is it staying somewhere off season, or a local place you can easily drive to? Would love to hear your ideas.

The cheapest vacation DH and I ever took was to Puerto Plata, DR. We went in March 2008 and got a great deal..I think that most people who go to DR go to Punta Cana so Puerto Plata tends to get overlooked.

Most of dh's and I's vacation have been budget friendly. Since dh and I are not huge gamblers, Vegas is budget friendly for us.

Re: What's your favorite budget/bargain vacation?

This is probably not the answer you were looking for but part of the fun for me in planning a vacation is making any destination budget friendly.

Obviously some places cannot be done for less than a few thousand - an African safari comes to mind - but almost any destination offers budget hotels/restaurants and off peak times to fly.

To give you a "real" answer, I like local trips to cities for budget getaways. Boston, D.C., etc. They are within driving distance and many of the attractions are free or cheap (esp. D.C.)

WOW!

Was it nice? I'm always worried about "you get what you pay for"

For DH and I, our bargain vacation is Disney World. We have Annual Passes and DVC, so we pay very little OOP for each trip. We also use a companion airfare on his Delta card so it's really cheap.

I also had an amazing time at a B&B we got through Living Social deals.

It was nice..We did 5 nights and it was in February or March of 2008. We each paid $700 for 5 nights in an all inclusive and direct airfare. That was a great deal. The hotel was Grand Oasis Marien. I think it might have changed names since. We enjoyed ourselves. It wasn't a huge resort but we thought it was very clean, had enough beach and pool chairs and we actually thought the food was good.

Same here but we're going in May! We've only ever been to one all inclusive before- Couples Swept Away in Jamaica and I don't know if I'll ever go back to cruising. I truly love it!

For us, since we live in FL and don't need airfare, it's a cruise. We're looking to go on one in Nov and i've found the prices to be only $1200-$1500 total for the 2 of us for a 7-day to the caribbean.

Re: What's your favorite budget/bargain vacation?

I don't know if this will really pertain, but DH and I love to just get on our bikes, pack some clothes for a few days, and leave Frankfurt (where we live). We pick a route and just ride until we feel like stopping and find a B&B in a cute town. We then do that again the next day. Depending on how many days we have, we repeat that. On the last day, we get on a train with our bikes and go home. It's pretty budget, and we enjoy the exercise.

I have to do cruises on a few different lines for my certification and was looking at this. Do you have any suggestions for a specific cruise line or ship? It goes without saying that Disney is my favorite cruise line, so something that would be most similar to that would be good (We have no kids, but we're not big boozers)

for the price, carnival is cheapest. but i think queen mary and princess do that route. they are probably a better bet for service/food/selection.

I also like to cruise to Bermuda from NYC - no airfare so it's fairly cheap. I like Celebrity - also cruised Norwegian out of NYC but I liked Celebrity better.

Re: What's your favorite budget/bargain vacation?

Cheapest vacation we took was a road trip to Colonial Williamsburg with a stopover in DC for a day or two. Total cost was maybe $ 600 or 700 for the whole trip including tolls, gas, food and museum tickets. We had a blast!

I love heading down to the Baltimore/DC area. I last stayed in Bethesda for a weekend trip to DC. I was able to leave the car at the hotel and hop the metro to DC, meet friends at the zoo, wander around the museums etc.

DH and I go down to Myrtle Beach, SC every year. My parents own a condo there but they never go. I find its an inexpensive vacation, all we really pay for is the car and stuff to do like go out to eat, etc. Once we have kids we will most likely start driving down there even though its a long trip.

ETA: I also find cruises to be a great value, and Washington DC was pretty inexpensive as well since most of the museums were free!

Cape Cod!! My father lives there so it is always a cheap weekend getaway for us. I get to visit family and relax all at the same time. It's my second home in a way!

Its not my fave vacation but its alot of fun and def budget friendly.
We go to willow valley, PA.
We stay at the double tree hotel which has an indoor small water park area for the kids. its in lancaster so dutch wonderland is right there, the outlets, hershey park etc... Tons of "heavy" type food. Its a great trip and less then 1k. We usually go there for a last minute weekend.

If you want good food and service check out Celebrity. They sail out of NJ on the Summit I believe in Sept. The food and service are definitely better than Princess. We have taken 2 Princess cruises and enjoyed them - but the food was hands down much better on Celebrity. There were several meals on Princess that DH and I hated the food.

Gracias! Our family members told us Celebrity also. I can't travel in September or January (boo) but we'll hopefuly get to do something. I just want a 3 nighter out of NY/NJ at this point because we're definitely planning to either do a 7 night on the Disney Fantasy or MAAAAYBE a 14 night Transatlantic on the Disney Wonder within the next year.
