Whats your favorite Holiday Memory As a Kid??

I remember we were staying with my Aunt Debbie, and her three kids and we came out X mas morning to two brand new bikes for my brother and I. Mine was pink and white with a banana seat, and streamers. My brothers had a motorcycle shaped mold over it. She and my uncle had picked us up from my grandmothers house a week before because of whatever reason...(Chat Icon ) and they had gone out and bought us presents for xmas when they realized we had none. Even though they had kids of their own to provide for.

Re: Whats your favorite Holiday Memory As a Kid??

Every xmas eve, all 4 of us girls would take baths/showers and put on our matching pjs that my mom bought us each year. Then we would snuggle up on the couch with my dad and he would read us Twas the Night Before Christmas. Then we'd all head to bed.

It's such a great memory that my dad buys us the book to read to our kids whenever one of us is pregnant.

Re: Whats your favorite Holiday Memory As a Kid??

I was 5 and my sister 3.5. It was Christmas Eve. We were taking a bath so we could go to bed early and TRY to sleep so Santa would come.

My dad was in the LR and said

"did you hear that?".

My sister and I looked at each other instantly. We both said that "what?".

Dad in LR: "didn't you hear it?".

We said "what?" so anxiously.

Dad: OMG... somebody came!

Me and sister started standing up in the bath tub. My mom did not look too happy (another one of my dad's idea....Chat Icon ). She told us to get rinced first. We complied as patiently as we could.

We RAN out of the bathroom in our little robes.

And there it was. TOYS EVERYWHERE. A baby carriage for me with a doll in it. It was so magical!!!! Santa had come early.. just for us!

That night started a tradition that the minute it would be dark, Santa would come to our house FIRST. Geezz, my dad said it was a long night and he had to start somewhere. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon That was the explanation my dad came with to justify his impatience to wait for the next morning to see us getting up and getting our presents.

We kept this tradition every year. Later, my younger sister and brother got to hear about "did you hear that?" too.

I can still remember that night like it was yesterday.

I think I was 8 and Santa got me a real infant carrier carseat for my dolls. I begged and begged for the real thing. I hated those little pink plastic things. I used my brothers carriage for my dolls too. I couldnt wait to be a mom! Chat Icon

Re: Whats your favorite Holiday Memory As a Kid??

Two stories come to mind:

1. I was and still am a wrestling fan. When I was a kid, I had ALL the figures that they came out with.

I remember the year my collection started. We were at my uncle's and he knew I had gotten into wrestling, so he bought me the ring and one figure (Hulk Hogan) which was disguised in a clothes box Chat Icon

I was thankful, but I mentioned that I now needed to get some more figures, since Hogan needed someone to fight Chat Icon

About an hour later, my uncle says, go in my room and get the box that's next to my bed. I want to show you something.

So I bring out this HUGE box. He has me open it and turn it over.

The entire set of figures that were available at the time came pouring out Chat Icon

2. Another year, I was breaking my parents' balls for a Nintendo, NON-STOP. And my dad played it off really well that I was pretty sure I would get it, but there was some doubt.

So, Christmas Eve comes and a different uncle got me 2 games for the Nintendo, except, I hadn't gotten the system yet. So, I run over to my dad with the games and brag and say, "well I guess I know for sure now."

He calmly said, "this doesn't prove anything - we got you an encyclopedia set and we needed bookends." Chat Icon

And me like a jacka$$ bought it Chat Icon

So, I get the system the next morning and I wanted a bunch of games, and the one at the top of the list was Mike Tyson's Punch Out. I got most of the games I had asked for, but in my card there was an IOU for the Tyson game, because it had just come out and was popular. About an hour later, my dad took a page out of "A Christmas Story" and found a bonus gift behind his desk and it was the game Chat Icon

One bonus story - one year, my parents surprised me by slipping tix to the wrestling matches at MSG for the next night in my card Chat Icon

Re: Whats your favorite Holiday Memory As a Kid??

My favorite Christmas memory is that every year my Grandfather used to dress up as Santa Claus and give all the kids a stocking full of candy or a giant candy cane. None of the kids ever realized it was him!
The year he died, my Uncle who is basically the real life
Clark Griswald, was coming down the stairs saying "ho ho ho" when he slipped and fell down the flight of stairs!
My little cousin who was 4 at the time said. "That's not clumbsy Santa! That's Uncle Henry!"
It struck me as sooo funny.

my cabbage patch kids!!! I remember when they were the craze and going to Playword with my mom and people were just running to the shelves and pulling them down into there carts and all I wanted was one. I didn't get it that day but when I birthday came around I got a knock on my door from a lady dressed as a nurse holding a huge cabbage leave and inside was my cabbage patch doll I will never forget it and I still have the cabbage and doll 30 years later.

the nurse was a co-worker of my momChat Icon

Re: Whats your favorite Holiday Memory As a Kid??

Ok- this probably isn't funny. Well, it was sort of funny at the time- but now- well, its just freakin hilarious.

One Christmas morning, my mom was making breakfast. It was one of those rare White Christmases.

So, my mom has her robe on with big droopy sleeves- and she's standing at the stove cooking our traditional christmas morning breakfast- Eggs Benedict.

All of sudden, she was reaching over the stove, and her sleeve caught on fire. Chat Icon She immediately ran outside and threw herself in the snow- and the fire went out. THANK GOD- she was ok and not hurt in any way. I think that's why it ended up to be funny. To this day, we all chuckle with the image of my mom laying in the snow in her robe on Christmas morning! Re: Whats your favorite Holiday Memory As a Kid??

Santa coming to my grandparents. We spent every Xmas eve there, big Italian Xmas eve. Well, my uncles would go into their room and make a loud bang, my grandpa would yell what was that really loud. I remember all the kids just stoping in their tracks. And my grandma would go out to see the reindeer jump off the roof. She would come in with this huge bag of presents that Santa dropped on her terrace. We were so excited. I remember after I found out about Santa, I was so bummed to learn it was my uncles making noise. I really thought it was Santa and the reindeers running off to the next house. It was the best part of Xmas.

Every Xmas Eve at my grandparents house in Farmingdale. It was always just awesome. A few days before Xmas we'd get together with all my aunts, uncles, and cousins and bake like crazy all weekend. Then on Xmas Eve we had a ridiculous amount of delicious food, a ton of desert, and everyone got to open one little present around 8 and then at midnight................it was present opening time and we always got SOOOO much stuff from all my family. It was always an awesome holiday!! I miss that house. Chat Icon

Re: Whats your favorite Holiday Memory As a Kid??

Every year for Christmas Eve we went out to a Chinese restaurant and on the way home we would listen to WALK tracking Santa Claus.

I was sad the first year we stopped doing this - I was around 18 and went with my now DH to his side of the family.

Oh! HAHAHA I forgot about this!

Every year we eat baccala for Christmas Eve. It is VERY salty so you have to soak it first. So, every year we soak the baccala in teh tub for a few days! Chat Icon just one of those strange things that sticks out in my mind.

Re: Whats your favorite Holiday Memory As a Kid??

I don't have a lot of good Christmas memories from my childhood, although every Christmas night we went to my grandparent's house and that was always huge and a great time Chat Icon

My favorite stuff is the memories we are making for my kids... every Christmas Eve we eat a big dinner and get all dressed up and go to Mass. Then when we get home, we read the Night Before Christmas in Ds's room, and my husband climbs up on the roof with jingle bells and stomps around. Ds is old enough that he knows it's DH, but the little ones are still all wide-eyed. And of course, putting the presents under the tree with DH....

I'm so happy that we are making GOOD Christmas memories with my kids.

Edited: OOPS, I just realized the name of the thread specifically said "as a kid".... sorry. Total FAIL on my part.
