Re: What's your take on this?
I try to give when I can, maybe something to eat, maybe cash. I am sure I am a sucker, but I feel like its not my job to judge how homeless or dire these people's situation is. The might be fakers, they might not, but if they are on the streets begging, something is wrong and if I can help out a little, I do. Unless the person is aggressive or openly using drugs, then I do what I can. I also read once that homeless people really need socks and toiletries, so I have bought socks for people before. Maybe its the years of Sunday school or good old-fashioned guilt, but I have that little voice that tells WWJD, you know?

What's your take on this?
I've heard it's a scam. I haven't seen any of these families but I've heard about them. They are all over. I'd definitely be leery.

Re: What's your take on this?
I just saw this 2 weeks ago by us in the Home Depot parking lot in Bayshore. A man, his wife and 2 children.
The younger one was in a diaper and dirty t-shirt and both kids were filthy sitting on the floor. I saw some people giving them money and it's still bothering me that I didn't call CPS.
I actually went back there a couple days later and they weren't there. I continue to look for them.
I'm sorry, whether is a scam or real, do NOT sit out in the the 90 degree heat with your children filthy begging for money. They are using those children to panhandle.

What's your take on this?
I guess I've become jaded in my old age. Might buy a cup of coffee or soup and a sandwich, but won't give anyone money. I tend to think that money would be used for drugs or alchohol or cigarettes instead of for food or shelter.

Re: What's your take on this?
I saw a family like this in the grass by the entry to the Home Depot/Walmart shopping center in Commack. It was a man, woman, little kid and baby in a stroller. It was lightly raining out and they had me in tears. I wasn't close enough to tell if they had on "nice" clothes but I imagine they didn't. I wonder if this is the same family or if this is a new trend.
I hate to say, but sad as it is I always wonder if things like this are a scam. Aren't there other ways to support your family than to have them beg in shopping centers?

What's your take on this?
I saw a family like this by the BJs in Farmingdale. Father had sign and was lookign for food/money. But on the way out he was on his cell phone. So clearly he has money for a cell phone but not enough to try to help out the family. Priorities.
Then later that day we saw a different family doign the same thing.
Personally I don't think they need the $$$$.

Re: What's your take on this?
honestly, normally I give a people a few bucks if I have it on me. Its not going to make or break me. HOWEVER - this family frequents ALL of the targets on the Island. A friend of ours recently stopped to see if they were legit - her husband owns a flooring company. She said give me your cell #, Ill have my husband call you. He told her he didnt have a cell. She said, what about your wife, she is right there on hers, I can take her # and have him call you. He is looking for help. He just said "forget it, nevermind" and walked away. I think they are scammers.

What's your take on this?
I would not give money and if I was alone I wouldnt stop. If I was with DH I might be inclined to strike up a conversation to see if perhaps the children were hungry. If I saw them eating a happy meal I would be less inclined to offer any assistance. I work in NYC and never give money however at least once a week I ask if they would like to go to a deli and get some food.

VERY interesting. I just smelled something fishy. They are so well dressed, clean cut, etc. I know you can be unemployed and still have your old nice clothes and still bathe and still live in your house and so forth- but there is something bizzare about this.

Farmingdale?
I saw the same at Bj's in farmingdale. Not sure how to feel about it, but we didn't give . Money is tight in many households, so you can't just give it away if you don't know 100% the $ is going to food etc.
The family I saw was Hispanic w a baby boy in stroller and an older girl holding a doll

I agree with this. I think if people continue giving money, this area will become full of panhandlers and beggars. Our quality of life will diminish and i moved away from the city To avoid these things. I'm sure if they need help there is always the local church, homeless center etc

Re: What's your take on this?
I wouldn't give them money. Would I feel horrible looking at those kids? Absolutely. But, there are plenty of people in need of assistance and to use your children as props to make people feel bad, doesn't sit right with me. Do what you have to do but having your children sit outside in the sweltering heat to make a buck is disgusting

Bingo and all these ladies who are "feeling badly, especially for the kids" and giving these people moeny are the exact reason people do this. it is a well thought out scheme! these people are using their kids to profit. I bet they can make hundreds in a day.

Re: What's your take on this?
This has been discussed on another message board I am on. I see a family that fits that description as well at the Broadway Mall, at the south corner where the road leads to Target.
Not sure what to think. I would probably give supplies like diapers or wipes before I would give them money. There are so many places to get services, I think they would benefit themselves and the kids better if they weren't out begging.

Re: What's your take on this?
No. I now give nothing. I always go back to the story of the guy on the LIE, maybe exit 60-61. A friend passed him every morning. One day he said I'm in construction and have work for you if you're interested. He said to our friend, no thanks I live down the road and make more money standing here with the sign. So since this guy is a scammer, I believe no one. If I saw someone at a supermarket, I would buy them food before giving them money.

this is going to possibly sound terrible..
if he would put as much time into looking for a job as he does begging, maybe he would have some more success.
Uh..... Yeah!!!!
And the wife is sitting there too????
My husband lost his job. I went to WORK, and he pounded the pavement (when he wasn't watching our son while I worked)
What the hell is that crap about?????
Times are you. It took him over a year and a half to find something, but eventually he did. And it wasn't from holding up a sign.

What's your take on this?
Has to be the same family, and the are spreading themselves out so nobody realizes that they are full of shit. The day I saw them (two Fridays ago or so), it was 90 something degrees out and you could cut the air with a knife and they had both their children out there.

Yep! I grew up in this area and my dad offered this man help once and he told my dad the same thing! Also, my friend gave this guy a peanut butter sandwich and he said "how can you offer someone a peanut butter sandwich without a drink" While I do agree that peanut butter sandwiches make you thirsty, she was just trying to help, lol

I would not give them money. My dad always said if you feel the need to give them something - buy them food - if they refuse and only want the money then it is their loss.

Re: What's your take on this?
Wow so crazy how many people have seen this family. I wonder if it was the same one? The man I saw was of a Spanish decent and his daughter was petite with dark hair and in an umbrella stroller. If I would have seen them before I went into BJ's I would have bought food or snacks for the child instead of giving money.
