If it's an area code or exchange I know, i pick up, out of curiosity. If not, I let the machine get it.

It depends on the area code. I answered a call on Friday from a number I did not recognize only because I thought it was a family member/emergency.

On my cell phone I don't answer it, but on my home phone I do b/c we still get calls for the person who had our number before and they either call over and over or leave REALLY obnoxious messages on our machine

This is exactly why I always pick it up. I am still training DH to do the same. I can't help but think, what if it is an emergency? I know that few people would call from a payphone anymore, but I remember when I was younger, my sister called from a payphone to get picked up, we didn't answer it, when we heard her message, tried calling back the # and payphones won't let you call them.
That is why I always answer it!!

Let it go to vm, if they choose not to leave a message then I call them up.
Same here withmy cell phone.
At home, if I know who it is because they start leaving a meassage, I pick up!

I answer it. Partially because of the emergency factor, and also just because that's my normal response -- to answer a ringing phone. I have to say I really hate when people don't answer just because they don't know the number. And I really don't understand why people call back a number when the person didn't leave a message. A few times I misdialed and when I got the person's VM I realized it so I hung up. The person then called me back to ask why I called them. Well, if you really wanted to know, then you should have answered!! Now you just cost me my time plus another minute on my cell phone plan for nothing!

I used to always go to voicemail - BUT my grandmother tried calling me when she was injured after a fall and she used someone's cell phone - to try to reach me. But didn't leave a messge so I had no idea until she tried my cell that there was something wrong. Now I answer when I can - unless it is clearly a solicitor or other number without a local area code
