When applying for Life Insurance
Does the insurance company have the right to go through your medical records? I know they have the names of the docs but do they have the right to go through the docs notes?

Yes, they do. That is part of what you consent to when you sign the application. It is a separate section but they have the right to request and do request, doctor's notes.

Re: When applying for Life Insurance
Of course they do, they are seeing if you are worthy of their insurance. They will most likely not insure you if you have an existing condition.

Re: When applying for Life Insurance
Do they thumb through all your info or do they do their own physical part and if that comes back good do they just ask your doc if you are healthy? Does someone physically go to the office and look you up?

They do have the right to go through your medical records to see how your overall health is and what kind of "risk" you are. However, saying that they will most likely not insure you if you have an existing conditio is not entirely true. It depends on the condition and how they feel, along w/ other factors, it affects your overall health. Certain conditions, if bad, may cause one to get denied, but most of the time will cause one to get "rated"...pay a higher premium. It also depends on how strict the company is. Some companies are very strict (I work for one of them), but some are not. Each use their own standards.
ETA: They usually get an attending physician statement (if needed) which will provide the underwriters with info about any conditions you may have had, any tests recommended by the doctor (within a certain amount of time), etc.

Re: When applying for Life Insurance
They will also send a nurse to your house to draw your blood. This is how we found out my DH had high liver enzymes. They still insured him but at a higher rate

We've already had the physicals. I have high cholesterol (pregnancy induced) but there is nothing like a free physical in the comfort of your own home

Re: When applying for Life Insurance
They get their info from the MIB..medical information bureau..if there is a condition that may rate your policy they will go to get doctor records.
Usually blood and urine is taken along with BP.
