When did you "retire" your swing?

We have the FP Baby Papasian and Gracie is 15.5 lbs. She is 7 months (as of yesterday Chat Icon ). She has started to sit up in the swing and I think it is time for the swing to retire. Chat Icon
The thing is, Grace can only sit up on her own for about 30 seconds and can sit tripod for longer. We have hardwood floors with a rug that is kinda thin and not very "cushy".

What else can I get for her to sit in? I think she may be too old/big for the BUMBO seat.

OR

Should I wait it out because she will be sitting on her own in a few weeks?

I know it is a dumb question, but I am interested in what the thoughts of the other moms are. TIA Chat Icon

It's already pretty much on it's way to retirement. DS is 6 months old and he can still fit in it but he has no interest in it at all. Never did...Luckily it was the small take a long swing and not those big ones.

Re: When did you "retire" your swing?

We are 75% done with the swing. DD is only about 16 lbs but she can sit up on her own and has been for awhile.

She scares me when she is sitting up and her hands are over the play bar.

She never really liked the swing much, we dont' put her in it much, it won't be missedChat Icon

Marron is 7.5 months old and has been sitting up for a while now. She still uses the swing daily. She actually likes going in it. I think it is kind of like her "recliner". Chat Icon She goes in there, takes her binky and goes to sleep. I think it is a resting place for her -- away from the work of sitting, playing and trying to crawl. I don't see it going into retirement any time soon (although I don't know where we will put it when the Christmas tree goes up).

p/s - she is about 16lbs now.

Ava hates the swing. She's six months old and even on the occassions where she will sit in it, she tries to reach down to the floor out of itChat Icon So, it's out of the rotation of baby toys nowChat Icon

Re: When did you "retire" your swing?

We're still using ours. Ellie is 6 1/2 mos. She hasn't sat upright in it yet while it's in the reclining position so we still use it for naps. The only time she sits up is when we put it in the upright position for her to play in and we only do that on ocasion. I'm not wild about using it that way.

Re: When did you "retire" your swing?

oh my gosh- my DD is only 4 months old and weighs more than your baby! I have such a chubalub!

Anyway, we are slowly weaning DD from the swing- it used to be the only place she'd sleep- now we're using CIO in the crib & it seems to be working. As soon as she's fully in the crib, the swing is going in the basement permanently- we relied on it too much in the beginning.

Re: When did you "retire" your swing?

My son is 6 1/2 months and still uses it. Althoughe hes getting very big for it, he's almost 19 lbs.! But he enjoys it about 1x a day. He's also tripoding and I have hardwood and area rugs. I put my older sons sleeping bag on the floor unzipped. Any cushy blanket would do though, so he has extra padding for the headers LOL I put pillows around the area so he cant roll too far otherwise he ends up rolling onto the wood and into the dining room if Im not looking.

Re: When did you "retire" your swing?

Michael was around 8 months old. He still fit in it (a bit snug, lol), but he loved it and enjoyed just sitting in it watching Baby Einstein and relaxing - it didn't even have to be swinging. Chat Icon

It was sad for me to pack it up and put it away.

ETA - when Michael was starting to sit, I used the Boppy pillow to prop him up on the floor (he sat right in the middle of it)- we have carpet in his playroom, but you can always put a comforter or an area rug to "cushion" it a bit. The Boppy really helped him sit up and if he tipped over the pillow protected his head! Chat Icon
