When did you start reading to your child?

I know you can start really early - like, right when they are born - but my DS never seemed to enjoy it and now at 9 months, all he wants to do is rip the pages or eat them so it is difficult to read him a book. I am an avid reader and feel like reading to him will help his intellectual development but how do I get him to pay attention?

Re: When did you start reading to your child?

Hmm, thats tough. I started reading really early, like a month or so. Sometimes Hailey pays attention and sometimes she likes to turn the pages backwards. I would just say keep trying. I am sure eventually he will start paying more attention. Good luck.

DS doesn't always pay attention, but I go ahead and ready anyway while he plays. I want him to love books, so I'll give him board books to chew with and look at and I'll read books that he may rip.

Re: When did you start reading to your child?

Even if you think he's not paying attention, he is. I promise. I would follow Ava around while she crawled and read to herChat Icon Or I would read to her in the high chair where she couldn't grab the book. Now, at 14 months, her favorite thing to play with is her mounds of books. She can sit quietly for a good 45 minutes sometimes just flipping through her books and touching them and talking to them. Don't stop, he does hear you! I promise!

Stick with it! I find that books with rhythmic language have worked best with Emma- Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Chicka Chicka 123 have been hits with her so far. I started when Emma was a few weeks but have only been doing it nightly for a couple months. At this age, I think that you establishing the habit is the most important, and he'll catch on more and more.

I started reading to him when he was a tiny baby. Now it's a little more difficult. Sometimes he'll sit quietly on my lap and listen. Usually he grabs the book from me and wants to flip the pages and read (babble) to me. He loves his books, though. He's constantly flipping through them, touching them and babbling to them. I read to him now at 3 months if he seems to be in a quiet mood.

He pays attention and seems to like it.

Re: When did you start reading to your child?

I started with John when we was a month old and read alot to him the first couple of months. Now I read about one book a day and he is more interested in ripping the pages and sucking on the book but, I keep going.

Re: When did you start reading to your child?

My DS turns the pages so fast, that I have to make up the stories, because I can't read the words.

I read to her every now and then, but I try to have DS read to her almost every night so he can practice his reading. He's doing better on it and she seems to enjoy him reading. Chat Icon

I started reading to my girls when they were still in the womb. They both LOVE books and prefer to read over playing with toys. Chat Icon

i started at birth also. I never give Jordana books with paper because she *will* rip them apart (Trust me- i have a few shredded books).

Try getting some short, small board books. See if he gets interested in them.

Re: When did you start reading to your child?

I also started at birth. I first got black and white books since they can't see color until after a few months and then we progressed to colored cardboard books. Ds's favorite is Goodnight Moon.

Birth! And now at 7 months he loves to look at the pictures and open up all the little doors, etc on his pop up books!

Re: When did you start reading to your child?

I kept trying, though she didn't really show interest until 10-11 months. Board books are definitely the way to go. Now she "reads" along with me and points out pics.
