When did you stop putting food on the highchair tray and into bowls/plates

If I put a bowl of dried cherrios on my son's tray his immediate instinct is to dump the bowl.

I never just put food on their tray (ok, maybe some Cheerios or things like that I did)! I often wonder why people do this Chat Icon I always put their food in a plastic bowl or on a plastic plate. Sure, they dumped plenty of them over Chat Icon but they got the hang of it! The way I look at it, I would never just put my food on the table, so I wouldn't just put it on the tray for them.

Same.

DS uses a spoon and a fork now too.

Ditto. Except for little odds and ends, we rarely used the tray as a dish. It was usually in some sort of container. (at least initially.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon )

I still do put food on the tray...but I just got one of those suction cup bowls so I will start putting it in the bowl...I think it was easier to just put it on the tray. And I think putting food on the tray is very different than putting it on the table...don't see the need for the comparisonChat Icon Anyways Kuks, try getting that suction bowl.Chat Icon

No need for the eye rolls. I just stated that I thought it was weird when I would see people put food on the tray (things like spaghetti and sauce and mac and cheese) and not on a plate or in a bowl. For me there was a comparison, I am teaching my children to eat, and that includes using cups, plates, bowls and utensils. To each their own. I don't feel out of line because people have agreed with me. I'm not asking you to.

Whatever, your statement was rather condescending IMO. The OP didn't ask whether or not you put the food on the tray but rather when you stopped putting the food on the tray and started to use bowls, etc.

ETA: I still feed DS with things like mac n cheese and spaghetti and things like that I don't see myself putting on the tray either. But foods like fruit, cheerios or other finger food I do put on the tray.

It depends on the food. Chicken and things like that I just put on the booster tray since I wash the tray after every meal. Runnier foods and fruit go in a bowl. My DD always dumps the cheerios or Life cereal too. An idea is to put them in a snack trap cup that way they can't be dumped.

I put my dds food on a tray until she wanted to be moved right up to the table. She has been sitting at the table with bowls/plates etc since she before 14 months. I really don't remember though. My mother always thinks its barbaric but hey it worked for us. At 16 months she was definately able to handle all her spoon, bowl and plate with no problem.

I find this so interesting. When my son was little I pushed the spoon and fork and bowls and plates. My son learned in a timely fashion to eat properly. With my dd I am running around and frequently plopped food in front of her with no utensils until one day she said "NO!' and just started eating with a spoon. No teaching or anything and she insists on eating with a spoon while my son used to toss his on the floor all the time.

I guess what I al trying to say is there are different ways of teaching and learning and I am defiantely not trying to stir up drama about something ridiculous like feeding from a tray or bowl. So please don't take this as a judgement, it definately was just meant as an observation about my own children.

Depends...grilled cheese and chicken fingers I may put on his tray.

Mac and cheese and spaghetti and things like that go in a bowl, but I still feed him those.

ETA: to respond to your post my kids are about 21mos and I still put things on there tray. I try to put some things in bowls/plates. It all depends on the food and mood!lol.
