Re: When Did Your Child Learn The Alphabet?

I can't remember exactly when, but she started singing the Alphabet song, probably around 2 years old. By 2 years, 3 months or so, she could sing it without making any mistakes.

Re: When Did Your Child Learn The Alphabet?

I think there's a difference between learning the alphabet & just repeating the song....

I teach PRE-K & most of my kids can say the song, but few know all their letters & even fewer can recognize the letters out of context (ie., what letter is this?)

She knew the song at 18 months and around 2 she knews her alphabet without singing it and understood what she was talking about. At 2.5 she recognizes all the letters when she sees them.

My DS knew all his letters by 2 1/2 but it was very early. My DD is 3 1/2 and knows most of them for a few months now. She still has trouble with 5 or 6 of them.

I remember DS's sons SP told me this when he was 2.

He knew the Alphabet song and could recognize all the letters and say their sounds by pointing to them (the 'A' says ahhhh) at 2 yo.

Then I found out that the lower case letters came later (cause most things they are exposed to only have the caps) he caught on to that around when he started preschool so about 3.

DD can't sing the song for some reason but has known all her letters for months, I think she was early with this, maybe around 18 months or even earlier?

She can say all the letters, do a letter puzzle and pick them all out individuallyChat Icon

DS is two and we sing it (somewhat). I think he knows some of the letters but it still sounds like a foreign language.

I was wondering the same thing but like everything else, I'm sure he'll just start understanding it one day.

He's been doing better with numbers than letters.

DS #1 knew the alphabet at 22 months (upper and some lower case - all lower case by 2 1/2). DS #2 can recognize all upper case (no lower case) since 28 months - he just turned 2 1/2.

Robbie was doing the alphabet song by 2 years old - I remember because he was the only one in his daycare that could sing the full song.

Noah - on the other hand - is 4 years and 7 months and only learned to sing the full song correctly by rote in the last month or 2.

Re: When Did Your Child Learn The Alphabet?

At 2.5 yrs (33 mos), Nate can sing the alphabet, there are a few letters that he has trouble pronouncing. He can identify the letters and make the associated sounds to more than half of them. He knows 'N' is for Nate. He can write W, O, A, N and Y.
