when do they sit themselves up from supine position to upright?

Luce can sit fine when placed in the tripod position, but for a few weeks now he's been struggling to sit up when laying down, lifting his head/shoulders up and crunching his lil abs with all his might...

is this how they learn? I feel like his efforts look futile at the moment so I am not sure I should encourage him or what.

right now, I let him hold my thumbs until he gets all the way upright (guiding him but letting him do most of the work) but is there something else I should be doing?

My DS just started doing this at around 8 months. I don't think babies do a "sit up" to get into a sitting position. They usually do it by sitting back from a hands and knees position.

DD just started getting into sitting once she started crawling....around 7.5-8 months...

Didn't do it till he was crawling around 8.5 months. Other than that I put him in the sitting

now that he crawls he only liks to sit on his knees b/c it's faster to get into the crawling position.

It takes time. Sienna still can't lift herself to sitting position from laying on her back (and she's been sitting unassisted for a long time). She rolls over and then pushes herself up from her belly onto her knees and into sitting position.
