What do you mean? Like personality quirks? Or physical things?

I'd speak to your ped actually for either....Chat Icon Chat Icon

Are you talking about action regarding EI for your child? I just want to make sure i'm reading the question right (been a long morning and my brain is half melted...).

I took action when I realized his quirks were interfering with his development...around 14 months or so. It depends on what the quirks are..

I won't write anymore just in case I am misreading the question, lol!

Re: When do you start to take action with "quirks" and little twitches?

My friends daughter obsessively lined up her toys at 17 months of age..she still does it at 2 and a half. She has to have all her toys lines up in a row and she does this on couches...if anyone knocks anything over or moves a piece, she flips out. My friend was obviously concerned BUT was told through an eval. that she is prob obsessive compulsive a bit..otherwise all areas of her development were 100% fine and it really didn't impede on anything...

However....my son...he wasn't playing with toys appropriately for the most part. Any toy handed to him was thrown on our kitchen floor and he would LOVE to hear the crashing sound it made. I knew that wasn't "normal" and EI confirmed that for me. He now plays appropriately with everything, but I just knew it wasn't normal when it started. It was becoming obsessive and while other kids were playing with their toys my son had no clue and no desire to play how they were meant to be played with. He coudln't put a simple puzzle together at 18 months, or draw with crayons...everythign was throw, throw throw. Definitely impeded typical development.

For me I think it would depend on what type of "quirk" it was. Chat Icon

Well for no reason Bella will just start shaking her head back forth in a "no" motion...no sounds or anything, like not saying "no no no"...but just doing the motion.

And I'm just wondering if that's something to be concerned about Chat Icon

Logan does this too.

I think it's a dizzy feeling for them that they like.

Just like spinning around.

Does she stop when you ask her to?

Does she just do it when she's involved in other things or just when she's bored?

Yes, she stops when I ask and it seems like she does it more when she's bored...like if she's just wandering around the house, or sitting on the couch.

Re: When do you start to take action with "quirks" and little twitches?

Jack actually does the same thing with shaking his head no. It's not always if he doesn't want something either. I think it's just a new feeling for them - like Lauren described. Jack loves to be spun around so I would imagine it gives the same dizzy feel.

How often does she do it?

ETA: Just saw your response - I think it's totally normal personally - I'm no doctor (obviously Chat Icon ) but I do think it's fairly common at this age! Chat Icon

If it's not interfering with her day, I wouldn't worry about it. It probably just feels good to her. DS loves to nod his head yes really hard (not sure if that makes sense) not for any other reason then he likes to. Chat Icon

I agree with the OPs that it is normal. Christopher likes to run around in circles when he gets bored and then goes "WHOA".

I think it could be just a phase. How long has it been since she started doing it? Sometimes kids do behaviors just because it's new, she likes the feeling, etc.. That does not mean there is anything wrong. I would just monitor it or ask her "what are you doing?" while smiling to her.

DD used to do that often around 13 months - I asked the ped b.c a couple of people commented on it - but I was told it was just something she thought was funny and did. She stopped a while back but every once in a blue moon she still does it. I wouldn't worry about it too much - I think it makes her dizzy and she does it for fun.

My daughter did the head shaking thing. I actually have it on video because it used to crack me up. She did it for a few weeks, and then found something else to do that was just as weird.

And she also does the lining up of the toys that someone else mentioned. She is way OCD about it. Not only toys. She'll line everything up on my dresser. My son likes following her around and knocking them down Chat Icon She flips.

I think all kids pick up strange habits along the way and go thru quirky phases.

Re: When do you start to take action with "quirks" and little twitches?

I think it sounds normal, bt if you are in any way concerned Videotape it and show it to your ped.
DS developed a twitch at 9-months and we brought the video & DS to the ped .... within 24 hours my son was seen by a neurologist at LIJ and sent to the head of the line for an EEG. After all these months I can thankfully say it is nothing to worry about but everyone involved was concerned.

The videotape really helped to show every doctor along the way what DS was doing that was concerning us.

DS does this at times to be silly. I think its normal and nothing to worry about. he stops when i tell him too so i know he is responsive.
