When is infant considered constipated?
and what do you do? I know I have to call ped about it. Jordan (5 weeks) had a formula change to a form that has rice starch in it and I knew it would prob happen. He hasn't pooped since early Thursday morning - which is the longest he's ever gone - usually a few times a day. Tried thermometer trick before to see if that gets things moving. He is not really a happy camper but I don't know if that's because of reflux, constipation, who knows.
He also spit up again last night and this morning - projectile - which had really gone away with the form change - I don't know if that's because the poor kid is backed up...

I don't think its considered constipation until they are pooping pellets...
You can always try 1/2 oz to 1oz of prune juice in bottle to help things get going again though

Re: When is infant considered constipated?
DS is almost 3 weeks old and I asked the ped this question last week because he went from going multiple times a day to 1x a day (he has since resumed to his normal patterns!). The doctor told me that it was fine and not to do anything until it had been 3 days without a bowel movement or if he seemed uncomfortable. He told me to give him brown sugar water (1 tbsp of brown sugar dissolved in 2 oz of water) if this happened.
ETA: I forgot to add that like Brownie said, I was also told to look to see if there were pellets and that it was ok if it was soft, but not as frequent.

We did the prune juice too!! My DS had a very hard time pooping until he was on cereal. I would have to assist him in going (holdng his legs back, etc.). But the prune juice def. did help!!

Re: When is infant considered constipated?
I would say that if he is straining to go, generally uncomfortable, and is vomitting, he is probably consitipated. These were all signs for my DS who has had major constipation and reflux since birth. I found that when he was backed up he threw up more and ate less. As the others mentioned, if he is pooping pellets, then that is constipation. I would try the prune juice and if that doesnt work, call the ped. Hope your little one feels better soon!

He has not gone at all since Thursday early morning. Called ped office - nurse told me to use Karo syrup. - it's so much sugar though!

Re: When is infant considered constipated?
True constipation, you know when they go hard pellets of stool. Has he done any of those yet or nothing?
If nothing, since he usually goes daily, odds are he is constipated, esp if he starts straining. If it's the rice starch, etc, then a thermometer likely won't help. Ask your peds about giving juice and water combo... I would call my ped if I were you to see what they want me to do.

They didn't suggest juice and water combo?

No - spoke to a nurse though. I think I'm going to call the after hours office and ask them - they go and ask the doctor- besides the fact that the nurse didn't tell me how to administer the Karo and I'm hearing different things online - not sure if straight from medicine dropper, in formula, in water.

Re: When is infant considered constipated?
The Karo should be mixed with water. Prune juice (which we do) is given straight. I would try the prune juice (1oz daily) first.

Thanks! What do you do - give it at the beginning of a bottle? Or at a completely separate time?

I give it in between his regular feedings, otherwise he gets really pukey.
