When is she going to stop gagging on food?
I'm always reading how 8/9 month olds are eating table food but I feel like DD is nowhere near ready to eat anything but purees. She'll be 8 months next week.
Over the weekend I tried mashed up banana, tiny pieces of soft bread and i've tried a few other things and she gags on every bite. Does it just happen one day or is it gradual? Should I keep trying or is she just not ready?

Have you tried giving her puffs or baby mum mum's? I feel like those have helped DD transition to more table foods. It's still a process though, somethings she's better at, while others she's still "working on". I bet when she's ready she'll let you know. My DD recently started almost refusing baby food altogether, but now will eat some after she gets some more "table" or finger foods

I'm too scared to give her puffs! I guess I can try them in little pieces and see how that goes.

Re: When is she going to stop gagging on food?
I had the same issue with DS from about 10 months to 18 months. It was so bad at times, that once a cretain texture went in his mouth he would vomit. I tranisioned him slowly to new textures. And went very slow with the changes.
It took a little while but he eats everything now!!!

Don't be, they seriously dissolve so quickly. Baby Mum mums dissolve so quickly too, maybe even quicker! Try them yourself if you want first (the puffs don't taste bad )
She might like it, and if not, try again in a few days. She'll probably let you know when she' ready though. I remember first giving DD oatmeal and she hated it! We waited tried again, she was better and now she wants solids!

Re: When is she going to stop gagging on food?
my DS was doing this too which perplexed me since my DD Was a total pro with table food. he figured out the puffs finally, then cheerios and mum mums. try the puffs. i felt ok giving them b/c they do dissolve and get mushy immediately. just this past week (DS will be 9 months on the 22nd) he is finally eating banana, black beans, pancakes. that is real progress for him! i thought it would never happen.

Re: When is she going to stop gagging on food?
DD just turned 8 months and we have the same problem with her. Even the littles bit of "chunk" in her food causing her to gag and then she refuses to eat. I feel like she is a long way away fro table food too. She does ok with baby Cherrios that i got at BRU, i put them on the side of her mouth but that is all she seems to tolerate.

Re: When is she going to stop gagging on food?
The only table food I have tried with dd is the puffs which she hasn't had a problem with. We were given the go ahead for table foods at my 8 month appt so I'm thinking we will start them very soon. I'm curious to see how it goes. DD took awhile to get adjusted to solids, and I anticipated the same for moving onto table foods, which is why I was so suprised she took to the puffs so well. I'm sure its just a practice thing, like I said above dd took forever to get used to babyfood, and then one day it was like she totally got it and it became sooo much easier.

I was scared too! I started breaking them in half and practicing with those. They are almost impossible to choke on since they dissolve pretty quickly in their mouths. I would start with that for practice. She's probably just not ready - it will happen though!

That is exactly what I do! Brooke is 8 months old I actually cut it in 4's..I'm a nut about choking. She also gags on everything but she seems to do ok with the puffs. It's cute to watch her try and mash it with her gums. I being giving them to her for about a week now.

Re: When is she going to stop gagging on food?
My DS will be 11 months tomorrow & he still gags on so many things. He eats mushed up banana, but little else 'real' food. He still gags on some stage 3 foods. Today I tried the biter cookies & he did fine. So I really can't give advice.

Re: When is she going to stop gagging on food?
My youngest DD would gag on anything that didn't come out of my boob or a bottle(even breast milk/formula off a spoon). Then one day (about a week after she turned 8 months old) she reached for my food so I gave her a piece and she ate it without gagging. She went straight to soft table foods(we skipped all baby foods) starting from that day. She is now 2 1/2 and loves all food!

Re: When is she going to stop gagging on food?
DS tried puffs for the first time around 7.5 months. He didn't get it at all. I tried again a few weeks later and he did much better. I was still worried about choking so I'd break them in half. He got much better with puffs and could handle small pieces of soft table food by 8.5-9 months. Your DD may just not be ready yet. Maybe wait a few weeks and then try puffs, yogurt melts, soft food like avocado or banana, etc.
