When it comes time to say goodbye...
My family always took our dogs to the pound when it was their time. It cost $30 and you drop them off there.
I honestly never knew there was any other way growing up. My last dog my father took to the pound a few years ago. I loved that dog, I was heartbroken that day.
Sometime later I go to adopt another dog and they ask me where my last dog was put to sleep. I tell them and they immediately start yelling at me saying that is no way for a loved one to spend their last moments and he could still be sitting there in a cage for all I know!!
I immediately burst into tears and am a MESS. They begin to fall all over themselves apologizing. But I've always felt guilty about that dog since that day.
So my question is ....

Re: When it comes time to say goodbye...
We've taken quite a few pets to the vet for that, unfortunately.... I never even thought about the pound, not that I would change anything, but I didn't even think of that as an option.
ETA: Not because of any humanitarian issues, just that I didn't think they did that. I assumed that when a pound needed to do that, they would send them to an affiliated vet.

Re: When it comes time to say goodbye...
Are you asking where we would take them? Our vet of course, we always keep their ashes.

Re: When it comes time to say goodbye...
Two of our dogs were already at the emergency vet when a decision had to be made.
Another of our dogs was brought to our vet and DH stayed with him until the end.

So my question is .... Although they apologized, there is NO reason for them to have spoken to you in that way. I am so sorry that they put you through that.
I have always taken my pets to our vet, but when it was time to say good bye to my first rescue Hans, we had to go to a 24 hour vet b/c we knew he would not make it through the night to wait for our vet.

We have always taken our dogs to the vet when it was their time. We also get them cremated so they can be with us always.

I have never heard of taking them to the shelter to put them to sleep. I wanted the vet that he had seen for his entire life to do it. I held him in my arms. It was the worst experience of my life.

Re: When it comes time to say goodbye...
I had to take 1 of my dogs to the vet years ago to be put down. We then got her cremated. Our dog passed at home last year due to diabetic seizures and my dad took him to the cremation place himself. He didn't want the dog thrown in their truck like a piece of meat. But they had no right to start yelling at you like that.

I didn't know you could to that. I would still take my pets to the vet. I want them to be in a familiar surrounding (the vet's office is) with me there.

Re: When it comes time to say goodbye...
I never had to make the decision because my cat died on her own at the vets office. As awful as it was, I was glad I didn't have to make the decision because I can't imagine how difficult that would have been.
Either way it's horrifying...it doesn't matter where it's done...

Same here. We've had to put lots of cats to sleep throughout my life. For the last one (my baby of 19 years, got her when I was 7), I stayed in the room with her and held her as she passed.
It was an awful, terrible thing, but I was glad that my face was the last one she saw as she left her body.

Re: When it comes time to say goodbye...
When it was time for my childhood dog to go I sat with him in the vet. It was so hard but I couldn't bear the thought of not being with him. I didn't want him to think I wasn't there for him.

me too. I didn't get to say goodbye to K.C., only Max when he passed. I told him he was a good boy and that we would see him again soon. I can't imagine not being there to comfort my pet.

I never knew you could bring your pet to a shelter. Buddy is our first dog and we would bring him to our vet so he can have familiar people around him

Honestly losing a pet was one of the hardest experiences of my life. I didn't realize just how hard it would be. I don't think I'll ever be ok with it...
