Re: When looking for a house, what was on your "must have" list?
Our list evolved as our target town changed and we didn't get all of our must haves, but we can add them in the future.
Things we needed & got -fenced side yard for DH's work truck & supplies -basement -four bedrooms -master bathroom -decent sized property which was very hard to find in our target neighborhood -we wanted a total fixer & that is what we got
Things we got as "bonuses" -5 bedrooms plus an office -waterview -3 full baths -huge full basement -a newer house than we thought we'd get -huge attic with easy access
Things we didn't get but will probably add -a garage -outside entrance to basement

- property (at least half an acre) - colonial - 4 bdrms - 2 + bths - fireplace - cac - wood floors - pool
-Also at least a 2 car garage since DH likes to fix old cars
Ours were basically the same. We added the wood floors ourselves and opted for a jacuzzi instead of a pool Thankfully we got everything else.

Re: When looking for a house, what was on your "must have" list?
what we wanted: Dining Room Nice sized kitchen at least 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms basement garage nice backyard
What we are ending up with: half a garage (since we are going to use the other half as a dining room) tiny kitchen (that we are expanding) 1 bathroom basement decent backyard 3 bedrooms eventually we will add a second bathroom.
The one thing that I did not budge on was the location (and a dining room) and the house is right where I really wanted to be so I am happy about that. It is a total original house and needs a lot of work but eventually we will get it all done.

Re: When looking for a house, what was on your "must have" list?
Must haves: -At least three bedrooms -Master bathroom -Kitchen that I liked as is - so I could be happy with it for a few years until we update it - Basement - Garage - Victorian or Colonial - Nice neighborhood, not on busy street - Good size yard - Not too much work needed to be done, since we aren't super great at DIY
Really really wanted, but wouldn't be deal breaker: - Fence - Porch - Lots of counterspace - Deck - Three bathrooms (one in downstairs, one upstairs for guests and masterbath) - CAC
We actually found a house that met all of our needs AND wants, but it took a while to find it!
