when renting apt. in a house
is it better to sign a one year lease or go month to month?

Re: when renting apt. in a house
my goal is to sign month to month
or 1 year with the option of going month to month
but we are looking for houses
I think it depends what you want

I'd like an apartment in a house, but I'm worried with a month to month the landlord could tech. raise the rent?

that never happened to me when I rented in a house before- but I do see that as a concern- I would want something in writing - saying what the rent is - and the month to month agreement- with a 30 day notice if I am going to move out

I don't think you would need a lawyer- just a signed a written agreement- maybe notorized

Re: when renting apt. in a house
i currently rent an apt in a house. we have a lease that's month to month, our rent does not go up and we have to give notice within 2 months. we went through a broker so the broker was there when everyone signed the lease, and she signed it as well. i would definitely recommend having it notorized. and make sure any changes made to the lease are initialled and dated by both parties too. i prefer the month to month so if we find a house we want to buy, we can easily move out. good luck!
