When should I discuss coming back to work?

People here are starting to ask me when I'm returning,if I'm returning, etc. I feel like I should approach my administrator and see if they will work with me? They always have in the past with all my back surgeries so I don't see why they wouldn't but you never know.

Should I wait and have this conversation later on or now?

If it were me, I would wait until after the baby is born. See how you feel, how delivery goes, etc etc.

Once you start feeling slightly human again, THEN I would discuss plans to go back to work.

For now, I would just relax Chat Icon

Really, that long huh? Knowing them, they will approach me sooner so I may want to be prepared with some type of an answer. Thanks!

just dont let them know if you may not be returning. This way you keep your benefits and make that decision when you are ready.
My friend did this. She told them 12 weeks and beginning the 12th week she told he rjob she was not returning. So she got paid maternity and a new job.

I would prepare an answer for the best case scenario. You are working as long as you can and you will feel great and revived after the 6 weeks (or if you have a plan to take longer) that you are coming back. That way you are protected and noone is suspicious one way or the other. When you get closer to going back you can tell them if you changed your plans.

Yeah. i don't agree. I don't think your job will let you get away with not having a plan at least til after you give birth.

How much time off do you get? What are they letting you take? If they are letting you take the full 12 weeks FMLA then and that is how long they are keeping your job, then I'd tell them you will be back 12 weeks after the birth. If they will keep your job longer, tell them that you are planning xyz (the amount you want off) amount of time off.

But if you are even thinking of not coming back, don't mention it, just go with the flow and say you are.

I can tell you that I know they will hold my job. I am having a scheduled c-section so I get 8 weeks but was planning to use vacation time to equal 10 weeks. I am more concerned that they will think I am coming back to my present hours now and that's not the case. I won't put the baby in DayCare so I want to work evenings instead of my 8-4pm. I think I will feel better discussing it now or soon rather than wait.

Its a tough one...and one I dont have any experience in...

I would maybe discuss options with them and then discuss when they would like a decision. ETC....

One thing I do know is that if you quit..after maternity leave..b/c they wont give you the schedule you will like..you may be able to collect unemployment.... But if you just quit and dont come back you cant collect unemployment. So if this is something you might want to do I would investigate on the subject further.

Re: When should I discuss coming back to work?

I would wait until after you have the baby and are a couple of weeks into your leave before you make a decision. Even if you have every intention of returning, you may change your mind about the timing, your desired work schedule, etc. Or, you may be 100% ready to come back. I don't think you'll know for certain until you've already had the baby and see how things are going. I plan on waiting until about 1 month before I go back to figure out my schedule. Chat Icon

Re: When should I discuss coming back to work?

i've had a lot of people ask me and i just tell them that i'm coming back..though i mentioned that i might not be coming back a full 40 hours to one girl and she said to wait to discuss it til after the baby is born.
She said if you tell them early on, then they could always say they cant use you part time or whatever and what if you lose your job..then you are out of disability as well!

Re: When should I discuss coming back to work?

I would say by your third trimester you should have a talk with your boss. Even if you don't plan on coming back, always tell them you are and don't talk about your leave or plans after the baby with anyone in the office-people will back stab you to get ahead.

GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING YOU DiSCUSS TOO! I learned that lesson the hard way!
