When should I start looking for a nanny for when I go back to work?
Yes, I'm not due until September. I will be going back at the beginning of January (yes, 2011 )
I'm going back two days a week.
I know with daycare centers you need to start looking asap because of waiting lists, but what about a nanny that comes to the house?
When is a good time to start looking? I will mostly likely be using a reputable background-checking website to find her..
Any advice would be much appreciated!

I'd start looking now, and see if you can find anyone through word of mouth. two days a week will be difficult to find, since I would imagine most people working as nannies would want a f/t position, so the sooner the better!

Earlier the better IMO
That gives you time to interview, reference check, come up with solid schedule, gives you more options

I didn't look until after the baby was born. He was born in August - I seriously started looking in October. I was in denial :)

(Playing Devil's Advocate because I am such a planner and would love to start now) But isn't it early for people to know of their availability in January?
Or is it maybe they know their current assignment will be ending around then? (I have no idea how these things work, obviously!)

There was one nanny who posted on here who is having her own baby, and only wants to return to work at that time, so I think there are tons of different circumstances!

True, but sometimes people know their work/job situation will change or end at some point...I'm such a psycho planner, so I guess my thing is I'd rather have more time than scrambling to look for people. Especially after baby comes, its an adjustment. Then you can also have the person meet baby a couple of times before she starts...worst case is you don't find someone for awhile, but you might get more leads ,more time to follow up, more ideas on where to look, more word of mouth to go around

Re: When should I start looking for a nanny for when I go back to work?
You really don't need to start looking until after the baby is born. You can ask around word of mouth before then but most agencies will tell you 4-8 weeks before you go back....
ETA: I am a huge planner and wanted to look much sooner than that but the vast majority of nannies won't know if their availability will change by January so it really is a waste of time. I interviewed in December and made an offer in early Jan to start in early Feb.

i was originally looking for p/t too - i started looking early, and i'm glad i did because my 1st choice fell through. I had enough time to find a backup.
