When to turn the heat on?

My husband is a miser when it comes to turning the heat on!! What temperature should your house not go below in order to avoid having your pipes freeze? And as an aside, to prove that I'm not crazy and just love to turn on the heat willy nilly, how cold does it have to get outside before you turn the heat on and to what temperature do you keep your house at?

We haven't turned it on yet...

Wow! I think I've had it on since early October. I'm not sure what the temperature needs to drop below to freeze the pipes, but I complain if our house is any cooler than 62. We ususally keep it at 72/68.

Re: When to turn the heat on?

WOW, our heat has been on, at night we keep it at 69 so we are not to hot, we have it programmed to warm up in the morning to 73, and then it goes down to 69 during the day, at 5:30 it comes back on to 73 and warms up for the evening.

We are both very hot people who sleep with the air conditioning on til about mid october!!!

Re: When to turn the heat on?

We've popped it on a few times...or rather, I have. DH has "jokingly" said no heat this winter (being our first in the new house) Chat Icon

I typically keep it at 62 during the day and then turn it up to 66-68 whe I get home...back down to 62-64 when we go to sleep. I like the air a little cooler and prefer to just wear layers around the house.

I put it on when I get too cold! It's been on quite a few times since mid-oct. We leave it at 65 when we're home and 60 when we are not home or sleeping.

Re: When to turn the heat on?

I think NYC says buildings have to have it on by 10/15!!!

We've definitely had it on, but I would be dying in 69-73!!! The highest it goes by us is 68 and sleeping it is at 64, which I would like lower, but DH complains he's too cold at night!

Re: When to turn the heat on?

We just recently turn our heat on...I only turn it up if our house goes below 65! We do not sleep with the heat on..Thermostat is set at 60! We raise it in the am & lower it when we leave for work

Re: When to turn the heat on?

We turned it on last month. We keep it at 68, will raise it to 70 if it gets really cold. DH cannot be in a cold house. We have dual units (upstairs/downstairs) sot he temp adjusts really fast.

Re: When to turn the heat on?

Until last week we had been alternating between heat and AC. Now the heat is on full time.

Water freezes at 32 degrees so if you dont have your heat on and the outside temp drops below 32, you run the risk of your pipes freezing. I had pipes freeze in my house in vermont and it causes a lot of damage and costs a lot to repair. Believe me, you would rather pay heating bills then run the risk of this happening.

Me too. Sometimes I have to put it higher bc I have an 85 year old tenant who lives upstairs and I control the heat. She complains she's cold sometimes. I usually wear shorts around the house bc I hate being too hot!

Re: When to turn the heat on?

The heat goes on when I'm cold. I've been cold, we have used the heat.

We keep the house at 66-67 during the day and raise it a degree or two when we are home. When we sleep I bring it down to 66.

Re: When to turn the heat on?

we havn't been cold so we havn't turned on the heat...in fact,we still sleep with the window cracked and the circut breakers on the heat are still shut off. I'm sure come the end of the month, we will be using heat.
