when you carve a jack o lantern...which side do you cut open?

I always cut off the top--the part with the stem.

But I bought a cheap kit to do this weekend and it says to cut off the bottom and just place the pumpkin over the light instead of placing the light into it from the top. I don't know that I'll even light it.

How do you open yours? top or bottom?

It depends where we are going to keep it.
Outside we cut the bottom, inside we cut the top.

Bottom is much easier for lighting candles.

wow - if you cut the bottom, i'd imagine its even easier to take the guts out.. isn't most of it attached to the bottom and then any loose parts can fall out, scrape a little.. easier righht?! amazing most people I think cut the top. I never ever considered cutting the bottom!

I've always cut the top off but it makes sense to do the bottom too - I just never thought of it!

A word of caution. I made a Jack O Lantern that I used candles in last year. I got SOOOOOOOOOOO many ants I ended up throwing it out within a week or two. It was gross!Chat Icon

I was so lost on the title. I thought "Well, you carve the side closest to you. How can you carve the back side when you are in front of it?" Ugh, I need sleep. Chat Icon

I cut the top.

With regards to cutting the bottom, I'm wondering what do you rest the pumpkin on to cut it? Doesn't the stem get in the way?

At least cutting the top off you can work with it standing upright and on a flat surface...KWIM?

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who didn't think about cutting the bottom off. I wonder how well it will stand up if I do it that way...

You can lay it on it's side to cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin.

I cut the top. I did the bottom thing a few times and didn't find it all that much "better". Be forewarned - it has to be a fairly straight cut so the pumpkin doesn't end up leaning in an awkward position and you still have to cut a vent hole or chimney at the top for the smoke.
